| Community centres, schools and local businesses were among those who joined together on Friday to support the annual event.
Across the city people sipped hot beverages and devoured home-made cakes to raise money for the cancer charity’s flagship fundraising project, alongside 50,000 coffee mornings being held across the UK.
Around 92 coffee mornings were held throughout Dundee, and so far charity bosses say they have collected £23,000 from coffee morning hosts across the city — and they’re certain that figure will increase.
Those taking part last week included pupils from the High School of Dundee, St John’s High School, Ardler Community Centre, Energie Fitness gym, The Card Factory and the Chrysalis Health & Wellbeing store.
They joined two million people around the UK who also had a coffee for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Money was still being raised for the cause today in Dundee, at a coffee morning hosted by P6 pupils from Whitfield Primary School.
Director of Macmillan Cancer Support in Scotland, Elspeth Atkinson, congratulated all those taking part.
“The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was a fantastic success,” she said. “Once again the people of Scotland got behind us whole-heartedly, helping us raise thousands of pounds to fund our services.
“We rely almost entirely on donations, and without all the hard work from our coffee morning hosts and goodwill from those who go along to their events, we wouldn’t be able to keep offering the fantastic services so many people rely on. ”
Although the final overall total raised is not yet known, charity bosses are hopeful they will hit their Scottish target of £775,000 and their UK target of £8.5 million.
Elspeth added, “This was the 18th year Macmillan Cancer Support has held the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, and it seems to get more and more popular.” |
