Alexander hits 100

Dundee man Alexander Thomson was the toast of family and friends today as he celebrated his 100th birthday (writes Debbie Kerr).
The centenarian lives in the Logie area of the city and despite reaching the milestone age of 100 continues to do his own shopping, cooking and washing.

Mr Thomson was born in Dundee and was employed as an electrician at Lowden Brothers electrical and mechanical engineers for over 40 years.

During the Second World War he was posted to Wick where he carried on his electrical work in a reserved occupation role.

It was there he met his wife Annie and the pair were married in 1942.

After the war they moved back to Dundee and went on to have two children together, a son, Alexander and a daughter May.

The couple were married for almost 50 years before Annie passed away eight years ago.

Mr Thomson also has three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was a keen cyclist in his younger days and enjoys crosswords and playing scrabble with family and friends.

To mark his centenary year, family and friends joined Mr Thomson for a special meal today at the Invercarse Hotel in Perth Road.

Mr Thomson’s son Alexander said his father was touched by the celebrations to commemorate his special day. “He is very laid back about his birthday, he doesn’t get excited about it,” he said.

“He does still go to church and he had a big day yesterday when they made a big fuss over him to celebrate. I think he was really pleased at that and very proud.”
