GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER . . . LOGIE HARP TRACE THEIR FOUNDER MEMBER

DAVID ANDERSON has been a very busy man of late as, in addition to help run the LOGIE HARP AFC team in the Dundee-based Midlands Amateur FA, he’s also on the organising committee for the club’s forthcoming 40th Anniversary Sportsman’s Dinner.

David has been frantically trying to contact past members and two, in particular — co-founders Jim Snaith and Derek McGlone. “Jim and Derek started the team in 1968 and, unfortunately, I’ve learned Derek passed away a number of years ago,” said David.

“However, Jim is very much alive and kicking, and is living in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

“I’ve spoken to Jim and invited him ‘home’ as our guest of honour to celebrate with fellow-committee, players, friends past and present the project he started with Derek 40 years ago.

“We are eager to ensure his legacy lives on for many years to come — and I’m delighted to say Jim has accepted our invitation.

“The event — on Sunday, October 5 — is proving to be very popular and I’m sure will be a very enjoyable evening.

“But I would like to use BwB — Jim says he reads it every Friday — as an opportunity to get a message to any ‘long-lost’ former Logie committee or players who are not aware of this celebration.

“They can contact me on David.Anderson@woodgroup.com or 07811 457221.”

David sent in a Logie Harp team group (bottom pic at foot of column) from 1968 and Jim is on the back row, extreme right.

Speakers at the dinner are former Hearts and Scotland striker Donald Ford and journalist Bill Leckie, with Tom Dymock acting as MC.

IN UNDER TURNSTYLES

The story from ERIC DARGIE (BwB, August 15) brought back memories of Tannadice when WILLIE DOCHERTY was a youngster.

“Although I often went to matches in these days, via the sneaky-in method of under the turnstiles, I was never under the old enclosure,” he recalled.

“The reason being that everybody told you you’d be covered in rust if the ball happened to clatter on to the roof.

“However, my main reason for contacting BwB is because of Eric’s mention of a goalkeeper called Clark. I’m sure this was DAVE CLARK, who was a fireman in the Engineers Department of D. C. Thomson in Meadowside in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

“I served my time there as an apprentice.

“Dave had a real feast of funny, and true, stories.

“I remember one year on our annual engineers ‘drive’, Dave telling a joke over the mike on the bus.

“To say it was a bit risque is an understatement.

“Some of the prim ladies thought it was shocking, but I thought it was hilarious.

“Although I played football for the Corinthians in the Tuesday evening Inter-Departmental League, I can’t remember Dave ever playing and he died a relatively young man.

“I’m sure he lived in Douglas.

“The guy who ran the team was FRED WATTERS, from Alyth I think.

“Perhaps some of the old hands at DCT can tell you more about him.”

EAST CRAIGIE JFC CENTENARY 1980

Well-known former local referee GRAEME CURR sent in a number of photos from East Craigie’s centenary year in 1980, on behalf of his late father-in-law, the legendary WILLIE HENNESSEY, who was with the club as an official for over 25 years, in addition to playing for the club.

The Shipbuilders are, of course, Scotland’s oldest junior club.

The top three photos below were not captioned, so it will be an interesting exercise for readers to see if they can spot any friends, relatives or personalities.

The second from bottom photo is captioned and shows Willie (front, second left) as part of this CORINTHIANS line-up from 1952 with manager Don Blyth.

Other players in photo are L. Blyth, C. Robertson, J. Madden, R. McNaughton, C. Blyth, R. Cox, J. McEwan, J. Anderson, B. McPhee, T. Sturrock.
