| Hundreds of runners will participate in the Relay for Life at Dundee’s Caird Park at the weekend (writes Lisa Trainer).
The event, which had its debut in the city last year, includes those who have had their lives affected by cancer.
Last year the event attracted 150 runners, with almost £20,000 being raised for Cancer Research, and involved 14 teams taking turns to walk or run laps over a 24-hour period.
Each team tried to keep at least one member on the track at all times, while all around a party was in full swing, including stalls, live music, quizzes and dancing.
Amongst the participants, there are many with very personal reasons for taking part in the relay.
Ricky’s Ramblers began dressing as clowns to fundraise for the charity after Linda Rattray’s husband, Ricky, lost his battle with the disease in April last year.
The family range in age from a 10-month-old to 63-year-old, and a recent charity event included a 70’s night held at the Powrie Bar.
Members from Dundee group Lifestyle Slimming also joined in the fun at last year’s event to raise funds and beat the bulge.
Twelve people from the club — nine women and three men from Dundee and Forfar, who had lost a combined total of 40 stones, took part in the relay dressed up as babies to help raise around £2000.
One member of the slimming club during last year’s relay was also a cancer sufferer, and the team was delighted they managed to raise money for a cause very personal to one of the group.
The Relay for Life, which begins at noon on Saturday and lasts for 24 hours, includes a survivors lap led by the Mains of Fintry Pipe Band, a disco, egg and spoon race, candle ceremony and prize giving.
Relay for Life is now the world’s largest fund-raising event, hosted by 22 countries, and is designed to celebrate the lives of people touched by cancer and raise money for Cancer Research UK. |
