Cameron can provide spark
Striker Mikael Antoine-Curier has tipped returning midfielder Colin Cameron to provide the ammunition to get Dundee’s season back on track against Dunfermline tomorrow (write Tom Duthie and James Masson).
After defeats to Partick Thistle and Queen of the South in the last two competitive outings, the Dark Blues need a win to show they still have the necessary promotion credentials.

As they look for that from this Dens Park clash, boss Alex Rae must decide whether or not the time is right to bring Cameron back from injury for a first appearance since pre-season. If it is, Antoine-Curier believes the veteran’s drive, determination and most of all ability, will add to Dundee’s potency.

“Having Colin Cameron back in the team would be a big bonus, because he drives forward very well,” said the Frenchman. “Chris Pozniak and Paul McHale have been doing a very good job for us in the middle, but I do not think there is any question Colin adds something going forward when he plays and that can help us get goals.”

Antoine-Curier is well aware that is likely to be good news for him and strike-partner Colin McMenamin — he wants to be known as a team player, but is well aware strikers are judged on goals.

“For me, being part of the team and it doing well is more important, and goals are not the main thing. But I know as well that people look at strikers and see if they are scoring, so it is good to score.

“After our last two defeats, we have been working hard on that and, although in one way it would have been good to have had a game again quickly after losing at Queen of the South, the two-week break has given us the chance to work on a few things.”

While Cameron’s involvement remains a maybe, centre-half Craig McKeown looks certain to make his first start after proving his fitness over the last couple of weeks or so.

The Pars have had their own injury problems, but Stephen Glass, Greg Shields and Scott Thomson have all been back in training this week and should feature.

After a defeat and a draw in the last two First Division outings, boss Jim McIntyre is looking to get back to the form that produced a stunning win at St Johnstone last month.

“I’m looking for us to give another show like that. Tomorrow is another day and we have to do things right again,” he said. “This is one of the best fixtures in the First Division and I’m under no illusions about it. This will be a hard game.”

Craig’s quest
Winger Craig Conway hopes to celebrate his new contract with Dundee United by stepping into the starting line-up for tomorrow’s visit to Hibs (writes Tom Duthie).
This week, Conway extended his Tangerines deal until 2011 and, now he is over the foot problem that’s dogged him for much of the year, is keen for 90-minute involvement at Easter Road.

“I’m feeling really sharp, I’m back to my old self and my confidence has taken a big boost from getting my new contract earlier in the week,” said the 23-year-old.

“It would be great to cap a good week by getting my first start of the season and, hopefully, helping the team to a win.”

If the Tangerines do come out on top, it will be their first maximum points of the campaign and Conway admits that will be a big ask against a team whose own bad form has seen pressure mount on manager Mixu Paatelainen to start getting results.

And he knows the return of a prodigal son in the hours before the transfer window closed last week will not make things any easier.

“It’s going to be a hard test because Hibs will be desperate to kick-start their season as well,” he added.

“With Derek Riordan going back there, the fans will have had a massive lift and the players will be pleased to see him back because he’s a quality player.

“We’re not sure if he’s going to play yet, but, if he does, we’ll need to keep an eye on him. The biggest thing, though, is making sure we think about ourselves and put in the kind of performance we know we can.”

To that end, United have been working hard in training this week and the emphasis has been on getting goals.

“The manager has had us in doing crossing and shooting practice. It has been very demanding, but the lads have enjoyed it.

“The more practice you put in, the bigger the rewards are, so everyone has been giving their all because we want to improve.

“We’ve also worked on the tactical side of things and having time during the international break means we’ve been really thorough.”

United will be forced into a change up front after it emerged Warren Feeney picked up an ankle knock while playing for Northern Ireland against the Czech Republic on Wednesday night and will be out for two weeks.

David Goodwillie, Roy O’Donovan or Jon Daly will be promoted to the starting line-up and boss Craig Levein has set his men a double target at Easter Road.

“We want that first league win and a clean sheet would also be nice because we have not had one yet this season and that is not like us,” he said.

“We’ve put a lot of work in during training over the last couple of weeks and now we have to take it to the pitch.”

Derek has old club in sights
St Johnstone striker Derek Holmes returns to a familiar ground tomorrow when he lines up against Ross County in the First Division (writes James Masson).
The towering front man had a spell with the Highlanders earlier in his career and, having scored for Saints in their last league game, a home loss to Clyde, and in the closed-doors win at Rangers, he’s anxious to stay on the goal trail against his former club.

Saints have endured a horrendous start to the season and their 14 goals conceded is the worst defensive record in Scotland.

They’re working hard on tightening up at the back and manager Derek McInnes knows that if they can keep the ball out of their own net, Holmes and his striking buddies will do the business at the other end.

“Homer has never let us down. He competes well, he puts himself about and he can play a huge part for us this season,” said Derek.

“He scored a good goal against Clyde and netted with a very good header against Rangers. He’s more than a target man, he’s a good finisher, too.”

And Derek went on, “Defensively, we’re determined to do a lot better.”

Saints have been working hard on that part of their game and are determined to put their defensive nightmares behind them.

“We’re going to Dingwall in a positive frame, knowing a win will be a big boost to us,” Derek added.

Kevin James and Jody Morris haven’t recovered from their injuries and are missing from the squad. “They’re big players for us, so not having them again is a blow,” Derek concluded.
