Dundee businesses urged ‘go for gold’
Dundee businesses were today urged to cut themselves a slice of the £6 billion London Olympics pie (writes Maura Bowman).
Local firms were urged to “go for gold” in 2012 and at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

“The Olympics in 2012 should be an opportunity for Scottish businesses to win contracts and I would like to think that, within that, there will be opportunities for businesses in Dundee and Angus,” said Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce chief executive Alan Mitchell.

“We have good businesses that should be able to win these contracts and we should be ambitious.”

Around 75,000 business opportunities are expected to be generated by London 2012 and the chance for Scottish firms to become involved was highlighted at an event in Hampden Park.

Former champion triple jumper and deputy chair of the London 2012 Nations and Regions Group Jonathan Edwards was in Glasgow to launch the London 2012 Business Network, a one-stop online shop for companies.

The Network provides information on opportunities to supply the Games, a business “dating agency” that will match companies to opportunities, and listings of future business events.

“London 2012 is already providing a unique opportunity for businesses in Scotland to raise their profile on a global stage,” said Jonathan.

“The double opportunity for Scottish businesses of London 2012 Games and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games could make this a golden decade for Scottish businesses.

The London 2012 Business Network will help companies make the most of the opportunities ahead.”

Among the Scottish companies that have already secured contracts for London 2012 is Mason Land Services from Dunfermline, which has been working directly with the Olympic Delivery Authority to survey the Olympic Park.

Scottish Enterprise chief executive Jack Perry said, “We have a real chance for Scottish companies of all sizes and with relevant skills and expertise to demonstrate what they can do for large scale projects on an international stage.”
