No help given to injured cadets
I have been following the sad case of the young girl killed while at Army Cadet camp and it has brought back bad memories.

My son was also in the cadets in the 1990s and was on a weekend camp when he and the rest of his friends were given an exercise which involved them holding logs while they took turns to run over them.

It had been raining and the log my son was on slipped. His elbow was broken above and below the joint. He was taken to Stracathro Hospital where they attempted to set it.

We received a visit from a young lady cadet officer a few days later who had my son sign the forms, which she told us said that the cadets took full responsibility for the accident.

My son has now had two operations on his elbow and is still in constant pain. He has a plastic joint in it now.

His army career never happened after that and he has yet to even hear one word after more than 10 years from the Army Cadet Corps.

We have tried to contact them but have been told on numerous occasions and in a very gruff and condescending manner that as he was not an officer, he had no claim.

We have tried for years to get this sorted so this is a warning to all parents out there. It seems that if you allow your kids to go with the cadets and they are injured, that’s tough luck on their part and on yours, so parents be warned. — Unhappy Parents.

Ferry bridge structurally sound

In June a reader highlighted the appearance of the bridge in West Ferry at Dundee Road.

In response I said I had previously brought the matter to the attention of Network Rail and indicated that I would continue to do so.

In its most recent update, Network Rail has advised me that its structures department has carried out a further inspection of both the Dundee Road bridge and the bridge at Church Street.

This identified the need for some steelwork repairs and painting, which are to be included in its future work bank. However, as both bridges are structurally sound, the work isn’t to be carried out at this time.

Instead, Network Rail intends to continue to assess the bridges along with the rest of its infrastructure and deal with repairs in order of priority. — Bailie Derek Scott, The Ferry Ward.

Not so rapid response
I live in one of the few remaining closes in Balunie Avenue, Dundee, without a security door, which means we have our fair share of drug users on a daily basis.

Recently, at 3.15pm, one of them decided to use it as a toilet.

My partner then phoned to have it removed and cleaned at 3.30pm and was put through to Rapid Response.

At 10am the next day the offending items were still there.

The smell was disgusting and my four kids had to walk past it on their way to school.

If this is rapid then I dread to think how long a normal response would take. — A. Crichton.

Traffic wardens
Every few weeks two traffic wardens ‘deter’ double yellow line/zig zag parkers at my children’s Dundee school by being present at 3.10pm, which works on that particular day, but what is the point?

If they want to fine these inconsiderate people they should come about 3.20pm when they’re actually parked because the next day it’s back to normal and road markings ignored.

After all it’s the pupils’ safety at stake, but four or five visits a year doesn’t make any difference. — Walker.

New Look
I have shopped in New Look stores in Dundee over many years and have always found the security officers polite, very helpful and excellent at his or her job.

Part of the staff’s job is to ask shoppers if they require assistance, and they would not be doing their job if they did not do so.— New Look Patron, Dundee.

Gordon Brown praise for Lady Thatcher
I laughed at Labour’s attempts to paint Alex Salmond as a Thatcherite.

What does that say about Gordon Brown?

Let’s not forget that Gordon Brown welcomed her to 10 Downing Street, praised her politics and lavished her with presents.

When will Labour condemn him for his behaviour?

All this at a time when candidates for the leadership of the Labour MSPs are stating that they will form a coalition with the Conservatives.

Of course that shouldn’t be a surprise to Dundonians when you consider Labour and the Tories are in a coalition in the City Chambers. — Political Connoisseur.

Obama ready
Concerns that Hillary Clinton supportersmay back Republican presidential hopeful John McCain should be allayed following the unity displayed at the Democratic Convention in Denver last week.

Democrats and the world desire new leadership and Obama is that leader. — Roberta Zimmerman, Dundee.
