Children’s ward given games boost

Charlie Kean (seated, front) made the presentation, welcomed by staff, young patients and parents.

A Dundee businessman today helped transform a paediatric unit at Ninewells Hospital (writes April Mitchinson).
Charlie Kean, of Kean Slaters, presented staff and patients at Ward 30 with around £3000 worth of entertainment and hospital equipment.

It was purchased with money from the Kean Children’s Fund, which receives donations throughout the year.

“Recently, I found out about a ward overlooked by public support and donations,” Mr Kean said.

“Kids go to Ward 30 for major and minor operations and can spend anything from a day to a couple of weeks in there.

“But there is nothing for the kids to play with and the walls are bare.

“Now, however, the children will be able to play games and watch DVDs.”

Amongst the donations are a 42-inch Plasma TV, eight orthopaedic pillows, six PlayStation 2 consoles, six portable TV/DVD players as well as various games, books and DVDs.

Susie Byer, senior charge nurse at Ward 30, the day surgery unit for children up to aged 14, said, “We are very grateful to Charlie who, once again, has been so generous and continues to be a great supporter of the Tayside Children’s Hospital.

“This donation has been overwhelming and we are going to be able to upgrade our play area.

“The toys, games consoles, TVs and DVDs will be a great distraction for the children and will help relieve their anxiety while waiting for surgery.”
