Marriage tip from Dundee diamond couple

Councillor Ian Borthwick delivers flowers to diamond couple Olive and Fred Reeves of Dundee, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary today.

A Dundee couple celebrating their diamond wedding today said tackling life’s challenges together is the key to a successful marriage.
Olive and Fred Reeves toasted their 60 years at their home in Barnhill.

The couple met during a New Year dance at The Palais in Tay Street in 1946. They were bringing in the bells with work colleagues from Keiller’s marmalade factory, where they were both employed.

They were married in the Steeple Parish Church, Nethergate and had various homes around the city before they settled into their present home in 1961.

Fred had a long career in the engineering trade, eventually gaining the title of chartered engineer.

Olive was an accounting machine operator for nine years then went on to take various roles in secretarial posts.

She also later gained a music-teaching qualification and gave piano lessons until she retired.

The couple have two sons, Graham and Phillip, and one daughter, Linda. They also have three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Mrs Reeves insisted the secret of a happy marriage is working together, “I just think over the years you have got to make the most of everything that happens and tackle it together — whatever life throws at you.”
