| Three windows have fallen out of the Rankine’s Court building in a week, since vandals cracked five of the windows last Tuesday.
The other two seriously damaged windows are, for the moment, in place, but traders and passers-by fear these could fall out at any minute with devastating consequences.
The modern building, used as a communal delivery and storage area for city centre shops such as Slater Menswear and H&M, is just in front of the Forum Shopping Centre.
Traders in the Forum Centre said they fear someone could be killed if the other damaged windows are not quickly and safely taken down.
One shop owner said, “I can’t believe they have left these windows like this for so long.
“They should have been taken out. Anybody could walk past now and the other ones could fall. It doesn’t bear thinking about.”
Another shop worker from the Forum said, “Quite often people stand there to smoke. They could be killed. It’s an accident waiting to happen.”
David Mooney, manager of Slater Menswear, said he was on holiday last week when the windows were initially broken.
“I was told there had been a problem with someone smashing the windows and some people say it was done with an air rifle.
“Graham and Sibbald manage the building and the windows that are ready to fall out will be taken out. Police have been informed.”
Richard Meiklejohn, commercial property manager at Graham and Sibbald, said the company had not secured the windows before now due to a hold up with their insurance company.
He said, “I attended the scene last week after being informed by Forum security that a window had fallen onto a parked car beneath.
“Police attended and informed us that the smashed window was as a result of malicious damage and we are awaiting an investigation.
“The area had been cordoned off. There was a delay with the insurance company but we have now arranged for a glazier to secure the glass. He should be coming today.”
A spokesperson from Tayside Police said, “Our investigation continues. We have carried out door-to-door inquiries and CCTV footage has been reviewed.
“We would appeal to anyone with information to call Tayside Police on 0845 600 5705.” |
