Last October, I returned to Dundee after 20 years in London. I noticed a difference immediately in the behaviour of our young people.
They are by no means perfect, but then who is? The overall standard in the city and its surrounds is very heartening. They come in for their fair share of criticism, so it is worth noting the positives as well.
I have been particulary impressed by the behaviour of Monifieth High School pupils whenever I have encountered them. Most recently, on the bus to the Angus town there were several waiting to get on.
They queued in line to board the bus, they were better behaved than most adults and I feel it is time to give praise where it’s due.
Whatever they are doing at Monifieth High it is working. Congratulations. — Elizabeth Paul.
Dog attack
I took a trip to Camperdown Park with my son recently and thought we’d watch the dog event that was taking place there.
I was very dismayed when a competing dog ran out of the arena and attacked what seemed to be a quite placid dog lying outside the roped area with its owner who was spectating.
I know dogs will be dogs and these things happen, but I was more shocked at the attitude of the attacking dog’s owner — he was quite abusive and foul-mouthed to the spectator, telling him he had no right to be there and did not even inquire if the dog was injured. Instead he just stormed off.
I overheard someone say afterwards that the attacked dog was fine. I was so relieved the offending dog did not attack a child. — Upset Spectator.
Playgroup funding
I am appalled at the lack of concern your letter writer G. O. B. shows towards the loss of our playgroup in Fintry, Dundee.
Many of us in Fintry cannot afford to make a financial contribution towards the funds that will be needed to save the playgroup.
I agree with your original writer that communities are being threatened by regeneration funding cuts caused by Alex Salmond’s SNP Government. — Fair to Fintry.
What is Campfield Square building?
The building in progress
Has anyone noticed there is a new building in progress in the car park at Campfield Square, Broughty Ferry?
Although it is quite small, it seems to have taken a couple of months without any sign of it being finished.
Does anyone know what this is meant to be? — Curious Resident, Broughty Ferry.
[The building will, in fact, house a new ATM.]
Hoy should get honour
I think there is no doubt that cycling star Chris Hoy should get a knighthood.
Knighthoods are given to people like Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Alex Ferguson and many others who have also gained wealth doing their professional play.
I think that Chris Hoy has brought fame to Scotland, and for his hard work, he is also known as Scotland’s greatest Olympian. Surely this deserves a knighthood. I congratulate him, as do most Scots. — Jimmy Borland.
Drivers need to take care at schools
We are only a week into school and already drivers are putting kids’ lives at risk with their parking.
I sit each day and wait for my daughter coming out of school and watch as one particular car parks at the small island that is used by the kids to see easily if there is any traffic coming, but they can’t because this driver parks his car, puts on his hazards and goes into Dens Road School to pick up his kids.
If cars are needing to pass, the drivers have to swerve around him and by that time all the kids are coming out of school. In my opinion he has no concern about the kids.
I would like to know his reaction if it was one of his kids that was being put at risk. One of these days an accident is going to happen.
Drivers should take heed, park safely and walk into the school. Everybody else has to do it. — Caring Mother And Driver.
Real music fans miss out
As part of my daughter’s birthday, I was planning on trying to get tickets for the Oasis concert in Aberdeen Exhibition Centre. My partner and I have bought quite a number of tickets through Ticketmaster.
These tickets went on sale at 9am and by five past I was told there were no tickets available.
I checked eBay and there were 12 tickets up for sale by 9.20am.
The asking prices were up to £200.
Genuine music fans are missing out because of these high prices. — Fiona Stoneman, McLean Street, Dundee.
Missing cat
Missing from the Camperdown Park area of Dundee is Loki, a long-haired beige and cream cat. Anyone with any information please contact his anxious family on 01382 610238. — Avril Laing, Camperdown Park, Dundee.
