College looks set for bumper year

Dundee College could be in a for bumper year (writes Grant Smith, education reporter).
As staff welcomed visitors to the Kingsway campus today for an information and enrolment session, it was announced figures look set to surpass last year’s.

In the 2007/08 session, the college had more than 22,000 students — almost 4000 doing full-time courses, almost 9000 doing part-time or block-release courses and more than 6000 doing evening and weekend classes or other activities.

Their success rate was 85%, with most students going on to college, university or employment.

A spokesman said, “While it is too early to say if this year’s figures will surpass last year’s, early indications look promising. Across all areas of the curriculum the number of applications is certainly well in excess of last year.

“Present enrolment figures have increased across most programmes including travel and tourism, hospitality, cookery, science, engineering, construction, civil engineering, surveying, retail management, theatre arts, acting and performance and music.”

Behind the scenes the college is also making progress on its long-term plans to reduce its campus from five sites to two.

At the heart of the project is a £43 million refurbishment of the Gardyne Road complex.

The contract for the main part of the work is now out to tender, with a deadline in early September. The work is scheduled for next summer.

Ultimately, the college will operate from Kingsway and Gardyne Road, with the Constitution Road, Melrose and Graham Street buildings being sold off.
