| Overnight work on the bridge ran into difficulties and motorists found that the northbound carriageway, due to have been reopened at 6.30am, remained closed.
Traffic was being diverted through Perth but the volume of cars and lorries overwhelmed the city and gridlock quickly ensued.
The chaotic scenes were perhaps worst on the Glasgow Road/South Street/Queen’s Bridge (see picture) with traffic stretching back to the Broxden roundabout and irate motorists stuck for over an hour.
Others reported that trips across town, which would normally take 10 minutes, were taking over an hour.
Bear Scotland apologised for the delays. One lane of the carriageway was opened around 9.30, helping to alleviate the backlog.
Among those spotted to have been delayed by the snarl-up was Dundee manager Alex Rae.
The second lane was set to remain closed with work resuming this evening hopefully completed by tomorrow morning. |
