PROSTITUTION BACK ON DUNDEE STREET
I write in concern about the prostitutes around Morgan Street, Dundee. This was a problem last year and things seemed to get a bit better, but over the last four months it has become such a nightmare.

I’m wondering why these girls are able to do this when it’s so openly going on.

For instance I took my kids round to Baxter’s Park after tea one evening and there were three girls on the street at 6pm. I then took my dog out with my husband at 11pm and they were still there.

The Government is spending all this money regenerating Stobswell but can’t get prostitutes off the street.

It only takes a CCTV camera up Morgan Street to see these girls and the cars picking them up.

They’re quite visible and are there every night from around 5pm. — Angry Resident of Morgan Place.

Fintry playgroup
A Fintry resident is dreadfully upset that Fintry playgroup is to close after 40 years. I would say that’s not a bad deal, considering some areas of Dundee never had one.

Considering the number of people in Fintry, it would only cost a few pence every week to cover the cost to keep this playgroup open, if they really want it.

As for putting the blame on to the SNP, at this moment in time Dundee Council is run by the Labour Party. They control the purse strings.

I do not vote for either of the two parties mentioned above. — G. O. B.

Linlathen shelter
On reading the story ‘Misery of drug den’ I was appalled to read that this shelter in Dundee’s Linlathen cost £35,000.

It is a lot of money to spend on a teenage smoking shelter. Surely the money could have been better spent at a community centre? — Credit Cruncher.

School praise questioned
I read with interest the article regarding new schools and the comments from both Councillors Kevin Keenan and Laurie Bidwell regarding how delighted parents will be with the new Dundee schools.

I really don’t feel that is how any parents of pupils at the new Craigowl feel.

Everyone I know is dreading the reality of a school where the capacity is 425 pupils but the enrolment figure is approx 550. At a meeting over two years ago, Dundee City Council was aware of the problem and was allegedly addressing the issue by changing the boundaries, which they did.

However, the authority has not enforced this so pupils whose addresses are in the catchment for Downfield Primary have been allowed to enrol at Craigowl.

The council spoke of the fantastic new facilities at the new school. By all accounts the music room is being turned into a classroom, two cupboards have been made into a classroom and how do they envisage feeding 550 pupils over an hour?

So Councillors Keenan and Bidwell should stop bragging about how wonderful a job they have done and start answering the concerns of not just the parents but also the staff. — Concerned Parent.

Be grateful for benefits
I respond to the letter regarding the tax credit system in the Tele on August 19. I work for HMRC and the fault lies with the claimant.

It is his/her responsibility to make sure we receive the renewal every year. It has been widely publicised in the press and on television and reminders were sent out in the post that all renewals had to be completed by the end of July otherwise payments would stop. I find it hard to believe that the claimant would not have been aware of this.

As to the other point, the child tax credit system rewards those with children very well. Each and every child is entitled to a £2085 p.a. award and more if a child or children are disabled. A calculation for nine children with one being disabled gives a tax credit award of just over £22,320 a year. Couple this with the child benefit awards of £6200 per year, this gives a tax free income of over £28,500 p.a. This figure is the equivalent of someone in work earning £39k pre tax.

The tax credit claim will be renewed and all money “owed” paid back. I find it extraordinary that someone in receipt of so much benefit can complain about the system. Be grateful to the hard-working taxpayer for funding you and your nine kids’ lives. — Angry Hard Working Taxpayer.

Brass necks
Great powers should not set about “toppling governments in the 21st century” said President Bush recently.

Dick Cheney said that Russia’s retaliation “will not go unanswered”, referring to Russia’s action in Georgia.

And then there is the Secretary of State Condolezza Rice who said, “This is not 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can threaten a neighbour, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it. Things have changed.”

All this from people who were determined to invade sovereign country Iraq, even though it presented no threat to America and had nothing to do with 9/11 and the bombing of the Twin Towers.

Brass necks? I think so. — Dermot O’Sullivan.

Matador story anger
I am absolutely furious after reading the article about the British matador in the Tele.

Not only do I not want to read about this cruel, sick animal murderer I certainly do not ever want to read the line “winning two trophies — the ears of the beast he had just slain.”

Not long before, I read about the horrific ordeal the pet rabbits went through and appeals for anyone who had information to come forward, but now you are condoning this?

I don’t think the Peta will be backing the Tele over this article. — Cheryl Mitchell.

Why show bull fighting?
Why does the Tele show pictures of bull fighting?

This can only help induce some people to visit such barbaric spectacles when on holiday in Spain, thus keeping this excuse for ‘sport’ going.

If people did not attend, this outdated practice would die, like the poor unfortunate bulls. — Stuart Cameron.

Followed by security guard
I write about New Look in the Overgate Shopping Centre, Dundee.

As a teenager, I like to look at the new shoes and the clothes to see what I can get the next time my budget allows it.

I am getting annoyed at being followed by the security guard. I actually was asked by one of the staff if I “needed assistance”.

I have never had a person from that shop ask me that. This is about the 12th time I’ve been followed.

I’m certainly not a thief. — Sarah Petrie, Dundee.

[A spokesperson for New Look said, “At New Look we aim to offer help and assistance and ask our staff to be attentive at all times.”]

Bingo night
A charity bingo night is taking place tonight at Menzieshill Community Centre, Dundee, in memory of Sheila Mulheron, a centre volunteer, who died earlier this year. Eyes down at 7.30 pm. Tickets £1 and 50p for children. — Janice Greenwood.
