I moved back to Whitfield just over a year and a half ago and can’t believe the change in the area. When I first moved here there was some trouble with teenagers drinking etc at the weekend, but now it is just a joke.
My father-in-law took my daughter out for the day, and on the way back, as he was coming through the park near the Whitfield shops, he was confronted by a child of no more than 10 saying that she wanted money.
When he refused, a boy of the same age said that he was going to rob him. After being told to go away, the girl said to the boy that they should have just hit the baby then he would have given the money.
Is it just me or is this becoming a joke when a fully grown man can’t walk down the street with his granddaughter without being threatened by two kids? Whitfield is a disgrace now, and to think I moved back here as I had happy memories of my childhood in this area of Dundee.
Something needs to be done, and quick, before someone is really hurt — and parents need to get their kids under control. — Angry Parent, Whitfield.
Puzzle of St Mary’s facility
What is happening with the St Mary’s Community Centre in Dundee?
Why has it not been completed?
I was under the impression it was finished, but it has just been sitting for weeks now and nothing much seems to be happening.
This is now the building with the disappearing workmen. Where has everyone gone and are we ever going to get the chance to make use of this facility? — St Mary’s Resident.
[Alice Bovill, chairperson of St Mary’s Community Facility Committee said, “Work is continuing on the final touches both inside and outside the building and we are looking forward to having our grand opening event later this year.
“The committee is keen to hear from anyone who would like to see a certain type of service or activity take place in the centre and we are also trying to attract funders to help with maintenance costs.
“Anyone who has any ideas can contact me on 01382 819124.”]
Driver was applying mascara
On the very day that stiffer sentencing for careless driving was announced, I witnessed the sort of driver behaviour that you normally see on police action programmes.
On Friday in Long Lane, Broughty Ferry, a Kia Picanto drove past me and the women driving was applying mascara while looking in her mirror.
The potential for damage or injury in a narrow street with doors and closes leading directly on to the street was very real.
The stupidity of people like this who think that they’re able to drive while distracted is truly breathtaking and extremely worrying.
Maybe we need to start a campaign of naming and shaming such behaviour? — Idiot Spotter.
Sentence anger
I agree with Mrs S. over her disgust at a judge’s decision on the assault of a Dundee man and the lenient sentence handed down to the attackers.
For too long these sort of people have been getting away with causing others grief and suffering.
My own son was a victim of a serious assault quite a few years back and he, and us as parents, went through a lot of pain and suffering while his attacker was virtually let off Scot free.
The system is all wrong. The accused plea bargained to get a lighter sentence — did they listen to any pleas at the time of assault?
Judges want to live in the real world. Will it take a member of their family to be attacked for no reason (and I hope they will never have to go through this) before they think of dealing with thugs in a more severe way? — Eye For An Eye.
Block grant
The Government has said that under no circumstances would the SNP get the council tax block grant for a local income tax.
However, their candidates for leadership of their group in the Scottish Parliament have said they would be allowed to use the block grant for any proposals they had.
The hypocrisy of their leadership candidates has been exposed and it’s time they did what they were elected to do and help the people of Scotland. — Political Connoisseur.
Right turn not wrong
I reply to Very Distressed Driver’s letter. I am distressed someone would complain about a right turn in Dundee’s Dock Street.
I travel all over the place and there are situations like this everywhere.
You should be prepared to sit and wait like everyone else when someone is turning right or be prepared and go into the other lane if it is clear.
Why should the right turning people have to be rerouted?
If you feel you are being held up then go to your work 15 minutes earlier. — Right Turner.
Stables reunion
Does anyone remember the riding stables at Camperdown Park, Dundee, when either Barbara Reilly or Martin and Ella McKay ran it from approximately 1980 to 2000?
If so, I am thinking of having a reunion. E-mail ppass@talktalk.net or gaynor.colivin@btopenworld.com in order to work out numbers and book a venue. — Gaynor Maddon.
