Anger over fine for shop worker
I have no idea what Sheriff Grant McCulloch was thinking with regards to the punishment handed out to the Dundee shop worker, as reported in the Tele.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that he had fined a shop worker £300 for assaulting a junkie who was thought to be stealing from the shop.

James Gilbert went beyond the call of duty as this person could have posed a danger to staff and shoppers.

At the very worst he should have been admonished but instead he now has an assault conviction on his record which may hamper his chances of future employment.

Sheriff McCulloch should be ashamed of his decision and has proved once again that the courts are more worried about the rights of criminals than the rights of decent, hard working people. I hope this young man’s employers have given him a well-deserved pay rise and promotion and I also hope he intends to appeal against this outrageous conviction. — The Watcher.

Hang head in shame
Sheriff McCulloch should hang his head in shame. I read the story in the Tele of the worker fined for his shop arrest. I am disgusted the worker was fined for detaining a junkie.

Maybe Sheriff McCulloch would like to work in a shop for a day to see what staff have to put up with on a daily basis. — M. Barrassed.

Amazing feat for Dundee band
Well done to Mains of Fintry Pipe Band, which has been one of the highlights of the Beijing Olympics so far.

It was great to see a local, small band play at such a great event as the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Well done to all who were there, especially the two young Braeview Academy pupils, Johnny 13 and Lorna 15. — Proud Scotsman.

Upset by playgroup closure
As a long-standing Fintry resident, I am dreadfully upset that the Fintry Playgroup in Dundee, which has done great work locally over 40 years, is to close.

The SNP government has cut local regeneration funding and local projects are paying the price.

Our former councillor said the £10,000 he received from the taxpayer when he left his job and became a well-paid MSP would be donated to charity.

I wonder if he would consider making a donation towards the £6000 necessary to save our community playgroup? — The Fintryman.

Call for photographers
The Stobbie Snappers is a new photography club from the Stobswell area seeking new members.

The club is an opportunity for eager amateurs or for anybody who simply enjoys taking photos to help document the regeneration of the Stobswell area.

It is not an equipment-focused club. Members who have relatively simple or inexpensive cameras will be assured of a warm welcome and will not feel out of place.

The club meets on Tuesday evenings at the Boomerang Halls, 110 Albert Street.

For more information telephone me on 01382 455656. — Neil Ellis, Boomerang.

Don’t pick on taxi drivers
I have been driving taxis in Dundee for a while now and I’m getting a bit fed up of people picking on us for not paying tax.

Honest taxpayer says name and shame but this is not fair.

When we renewed our badges we went through Disclosure and had to declare any points and why we got them. We also had to supply Dundee City Council with an individual tax reference number, which effectively states we are self-employed. — Happy To Pay Tax.

Park and ride
Welcome news about funding for travel schemes in Dundee. How about introducing park and rides? They seem to work well in other cities. — Park and Ride Fan.

Dance request
I would like to contact the lady who recently asked me about ballroom dancing classes/partner. Please call my mobile 0776 328594. — Quickstep.

Good for Google

I know there has been some concern regarding the Google cars which have been travelling around Dundee taking pictures of streets, but I‘m excited about seeing the results, not only from my street but from all over the world.

We really do now live in a global village. — Earth Watcher.
