Football: Blether with Brown > Touchline

Learning curve continues for Chris
New boy Chris Pozniak is happy to keep learning as he goes along when Clyde visit Dens Park tomorrow for Dundee’s opening home game of the new campaign (writes Tom Duthie).
The Canadian international penned a one-year deal yesterday and admits his knowledge of Scottish football is almost entirely confined to the impressive 90 minutes he played as a trialist at Ross County last weekend.

He does not, though, believe that will stop him doing a good job for his new employers.

“I have to say I didn’t really know anything about the game here and I the first thing that struck me at Ross County was the pace,” said the 27-year-old.

“Everything was so quick and, at times, I felt we could pass better if we slowed things down a bit, but it was a game between two teams with many good players.

“I don’t know anything about Clyde and, for a time, I’ll be learning about the opposition when I see them. If last week was anything to go by, I’m expecting another hard game.”

One thing he does know is that having played on both sides of the Pond — he spent several years in Scandinavia — this is the place to be.

“Football over there has come on, but in America it still tends to be more about the show than the game, so when I got the chance to come over I was delighted.

“Between hearing Dundee were interested and arriving was only about two days and I was very surprised I could play last Saturday — I thought that wouldn’t be allowed in a league game.

“I’m very happy to be here, and getting things settled quickly is the best way so I can concentrate on doing my best for the team.”

As well as a learning process, the visit of the Bully Wee will bring him another step closer to full match fitness and, right now, Pozniak believes he is operating around 15% below full capacity.

“I haven’t had a pre-season like the other players, but I’ve been doing some fitness work and I should be 100% quite quickly. I know that Dundee are one of the favourites for promotion and I want to help them live up to that.”

As he looked forward to the first home game, boss Alex Rae demand the same approach that picked up those first-ever three points from Dingwall.

“In terms of endeavour and attitude, it was very impressive last week and I expect no less tomorrow. If I get it, I should be happy,” he said, before quickly predicting a tough 90 minutes.

“Last season, Clyde gave us a few problems and cost us points. They were able to raise their game against us and we have to expect that again tomorrow.”

Last week’s other trialist, former Sunderland man Darren Williams, is again in the squad and, later today, is set to follow Pozniak in signing a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

The squad should also be bolstered by the return of Gary MacKenzie and Bob Davidson after their return to full training.

“They’ve looked OK and, as long as the don’t have a reaction, they will be listed — it’s still too early for Craig McKeown and he’ll be doing some hard running over the next few days to make up for missing pre-season,” added Alex.

Roy on Tannadice radar
Dundee United could add another new face to their squad in time for Monday’s SPL opener at Hamilton after it emerged Sunderland striker Roy O’Donovan is back on their radar (writes Tom Duthie).
The Irishman was set to join up on loan a year ago, but appearances for two other clubs in the early weeks of the season meant a proposed deal had to be scrapped. Earlier this summer, he was linked again and, while nothing materialised then, there is now a chance of the 23-year-old heading north.

Black Cats boss Roy Keane wants to farm him out for the season and views the SPL, and United in particular, as an ideal destination.

The Tangerines were not commenting today, but it is understood the next 24 hours will see the matter settled one way or another.

If O’Donovan is added, he will join a healthy colony of front men at Tannadice, though the man being tipped to be the pick of the bunch — Francisco Sandaza — looks unlikely to start at New Douglas Park. The thigh strain picked up at Plymouth last weekend means he will probably be on the bench.

Millar ready “in two minutes”
St Johnstone make the long trek to Greenock tomorrow and an irn-bru First Division game against Morton — but midfielder Chris Millar probably has a shorter distance to travel than even the Morton players (writes James Masson).
Chris, who joined the Perth side from Morton in the close season, lives just “two minutes from Cappielow” so just a brisk walk will take him to the game.

Chris has played well for Saints both in pre-season and in the Challenge Cup match against Ross County and last Saturday’s league opener against Livingston.

He’s looking forward to his Cappielow return where he’s sure of a “warm welcome.”

Chris went on, “I keep in touch with the Morton lads. I ws there for five years after having started my career with Celtic.”

Chris was offered a good deal to stay at Morton, but opted for Saints because “they are pushing to get into the SPL and I’m ambitious and want to play there.

“I’m happy with my performances and my new team-mates are a good bunch. I’ve settled in well and I’m very much looking forward to tomorrow’s game.”

Saints team boss Derek McInnes is still seeking to bring in a left-back and will continue with his efforts right up until tomorrow’s kick-off.

Liam Craig is suspended after his ordering off against Livingston, but Alan Main is likely to be fit enough to return to the pool.

Meanwhile, Steven Anderson, Jody Morris and Collin Samuel are due to get back into training in the middle of next week.

QOS visit Dunfermline tomorrow on First Division duty, not having won at East End Park since 1990.

That was in the League Cup and you have to go back to season 1955-56 to find Queens’ last league win at East End.

And the Pars aren’t in the best fettle to keep their good home record against Queens going.

Sol Bamba is on Olympic Games duty with the Ivory Coast and Scott Wilson is a doubt with a tweaked hamstring.

The Pars lost their opening league game away to Partick last Saturday, but recorded a good 2-0 win away to Peterhead in the Co-Operative Cup in midweek.

Nicky Phinn starred in that game and Dunfermline player-boss Jim McIntyre commented, “Nicky has excellent potential. He’s been excellent for us and big things are expected of him.”
