Gordon (gordongurvan@aol.com) is looking for details of a “mystery” football tournament held in Dundee around the mid-1970s.
He said, “The reason it has become a mystery is that I have asked numerous people about it.
“However, nobody can recall the contest at all.
“Consequently, I am hoping you can produce some information about it to prove the event did, indeed, take place.
“It was a five-a-side tournament played at the old Dundee Ice Rink on the Kingsway.
“I am fairly sure it featured the main Scottish top division teams.
“From what I can recount, albeit a blurry recollection, the rink had a great atmosphere and was choc-a-block with supporters making a real din. I even reckon Dundee FC ended up winning the tournament.
“If you can track down details of this event, which has had everyone I have mentioned it to puzzled, I would be extremely grateful.”
I’ve asked several ice rink frequenters of that time, but none were able to come up with an answer for Gordon.
These included former ice hockey coach MALCOLM REID, who, of course, was also a director of Dundee Football Club, and my former sports editor ED GORRIE, who, for many years, wrote the Tele’s ice hockey column under the byline of Centre Ice.
However, there’s something at the back of my mind which agrees with Gordon that a tournament along the lines of what he described did, indeed, take place.
As ever, it’s over to BwB readers.
HUNTLY AND FAIRIES WENT HEAD-TO-HEAD
Dundee’s STUART HEATON read the Celtic Boys story (BwB, July 4) regarding two Dundee football teams contesting a Scottish Cup Final.
“The team I played for in the Sunday Boys League was HUNTLY UNITED, who were run by police officer DAVE GOLDIE,” said Stuart
“We were involved in a two-legged Scottish Cup Final played, if I remember correctly, at Beechwood Park (Harp) and North End.
“I think it was against the great FAIRFIELD team and they won 6-3 on aggregate over the two legs.
“Maybe some of your other readers can confirm this because it was a long time ago.
“In the Fairies team were guys like Jackie Butchart, John Cord, Derek Meldrum and a few others from the Fintry area who I played with at the Joeys and Fed (Broughty Athletic) during Junior years.”
If the final was against Fairfield with some of the aforementioned players, I reckon it must have been the Scottish Juvenile U/27 Cup Final as I don’t think Fairfield were ever a Sunday Boys League team.
Huntly may have stepped up into the juvenile league after finishing their boys stint.
