Delay suits United
When the fixture list was announced, a Monday-night date at Hamilton to kick things off looked inconvenient, but, as more rain poured down today, Craig Levein was counting his blessings (writes Tom Duthie).
Despite almost 48 hours of solid downpour, the Dundee United boss did find an area of grass in St Andrews on which to train and is hopeful the forecast improvement over the next 72 hours will mean preparations for the opening SPL fixture won’t be hit.

“Driving up, there was a lot of flooding and we were lucky to have somewhere to train. I have to thank the ground staff at St Andrews University because they’ve put in a bit of work so we had an area to use,” he said.

“If the weather doesn’t get better, I can see a few games being off at the weekend, but, hopefully, by Monday, things will be OK and there won’t be any problems with Hamilton.”

The weather did mean United missed out on a game for their fringe and recovering players when the friendly at Lochee United had to be cancelled.

Right now, there are no plans to try to arrange another friendly over the weekend for the likes of Craig Conway.

“For a start, it might be hard to find somewhere that is playable and most teams will already be fixed up with games,” added Craig.

“We also have the reserve fixtures starting again next week and, with only a few of the boys needing a game, I think we can wait until then.”
