Pozniak’s year deal

TRUE BLUE! Dundee’s new signing Chris Pozniak at Dens today.

Alex Rae today tied up Canadian Chris Pozniak on a one-year deal — and his fellow-weekend trialist Darren Williams remains in the Dundee gaffer’s sights as well (writes Tom Duthie).
Polish-born Pozniak impressed Alex in the win at Ross County with a powerful midfield performance — despite lacking match fitness and suffering from jet-lag.

“He only arrived from America on Thursday, which makes the way he played on Saturday even more impressive,” said Alex.

“He has good experience and, like most players from America and Canada, is athletic and has a great attitude to his work, so I’m delighted to be getting him.”

Pozniak’s deal will include the option of another year at Dens, and his stay in Scotland will be his second crack at the game in Europe.

As well as playing for several clubs in his adopted homeland and across the border in the USA, the 27-year-old spent five years in Swedish and Norwegian football with Orebro and Haugesand.

He also remains a member of the Canadian international squad, with the last of his 21 caps coming against Martinique in January.

While fellow-trialist Williams’ travel-time to Dens last week was considerably shorter, the distance from home could be the key factor in whether or not he signs up.

It’s understood personal terms for the former Sunderland man are not a stumbling block, but, with a young family back in the Darlington area, the 31-year-old is taking time to consider his move.

Dundee remain hopeful he will be signed up and, even if he isn’t, he remains likely to turn out as a trialist against Clyde on Saturday.

Also in the squad could be centre-half Gary MacKenzie and striker Bob Davidson.

MacKenzie returned to training today after the hamstring trouble that forced him to miss the league opener, while Davidson was also back after the injection he had a week ago for a groin problem appears to have done the trick.

Delay suits United
When the fixture list was announced, a Monday-night date at Hamilton to kick things off looked inconvenient, but, as more rain poured down today, Craig Levein was counting his blessings (writes Tom Duthie).
Despite almost 48 hours of solid downpour, the Dundee United boss did find an area of grass in St Andrews on which to train and is hopeful the forecast improvement over the next 72 hours will mean preparations for the opening SPL fixture won’t be hit.

“Driving up, there was a lot of flooding and we were lucky to have somewhere to train. I have to thank the ground staff at St Andrews University because they’ve put in a bit of work so we had an area to use,” he said.

“If the weather doesn’t get better, I can see a few games being off at the weekend, but, hopefully, by Monday, things will be OK and there won’t be any problems with Hamilton.”

The weather did mean United missed out on a game for their fringe and recovering players when the friendly at Lochee United had to be cancelled.

Right now, there are no plans to try to arrange another friendly over the weekend for the likes of Craig Conway.

“For a start, it might be hard to find somewhere that is playable and most teams will already be fixed up with games,” added Craig.

“We also have the reserve fixtures starting again next week and, with only a few of the boys needing a game, I think we can wait until then.”

Rain pain for Saints
The wet weather today hampered St Johnstone’s preparations for Saturday’s away game against Morton (writes James Masson).
The squad had to train on the club’s Fieldturf and, with some of their players uncomfortable on that surface, they had to work out with physio Nick Summersgill.

Alan Main was back in training, with Steven Anderson, Jody Morris and Collin Samuel set to join in next week.

Kevin Moon had another injection in his troublesome groin in order to help clear up the problem.
