| The centre in Lawton Road will be run under the auspices of the Bharatiya Ashram, an Indian centre for education and culture with charitable status, which was established in the city in 1995.
Over the years, it has provided a programme of events for people of all ages, including education classes, lunch clubs and art projects. The centre can now consolidate all its activities under one roof.
The Dudhope Centre is located in the former Rockwell Primary schoolhouse. The west block of the building has undergone a major seven-month refurbishment, made possible by £800,000 awarded by various trusts and foundations.
The renovated area now includes a hall, café area, five rooms, an office and a conference room, and will be able to host activities such as performances, rehearsals, meetings, fitness classes and educational training.
In addition, it boasts an eco-friendly heating system with three large solar panels, heat pumps and under-floor heating.
Lord Provost John Letford officially opened the facility, and it was blessed by His Excellency the High Commissioner of India to the UK, Mr Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, who was visiting from London. |
