30 nabbed in Tayside summer drink-drive crackdown
Twenty drivers have been arrested for alleged drink- driving offences throughout Tayside during the second week of a police summer road safety campaign — including one motorist who had just passed her driving test (writes Debbie Kerr).
Seventeen men and three women were caught by police, bringing the total over the two-week period to 30 drivers — one of whom was caught twice.

Eleven drivers were arrested as a direct result of calls from the public.

One 19-year-old female driver in Dundee was said to be more than three times the limit, despite passing her driving test little more than a week earlier.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing, said, “I am delighted so many drivers have been caught and I am particularly pleased with the number of calls from the public that resulted in arrests.

“My thanks go out to all those who took the time to call us.”

Once again drivers under the age of 25 and men in general figure prominently among the numbers arrested.

In total there were 24 men and six women arrested during the two-week campaign and of those, 12 drivers (11 men and one woman) were under of 25.

A further 18 drivers (12 men and six women) were aged between 26 and 55 and only one driver, a man, was over the age of 55. Chief Inspector Bowman said the campaign results clearly showed that more needed to be done to tackle drink-driving on Tayside’s roads.

“Campaigns such as this show just why enforcement in respect of drink and drug- driving is so important,” he said.

“Our officers are on patrol 24 hours a day and the public should continue to report suspected drink- or drug-drivers to us throughout the year.

“The public can be assured that we will take steps to rid the roads of these irresponsible people. They pose a serious risk to everyone who uses the roads — and that could include you.”

In addition he warned, “Given that there seems to have been a significant rise in numbers of arrests for drink-driving over the past weekend when the weather was particularly good, I would ask those invited to a barbecue or function to leave the car at home and leave the driving to someone else.”

During the campaign a number of motorists were also reported for serious driving offences, including 205 drivers being caught speeding, 124 drivers or passengers failing to wear a seat belt and 48 drivers using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Police reminded drivers these offences not only endanger lives by contributing to collisions, but also carry a fine and three-point licence endorsement.

Members of the public can report drink- or drug-drivers by calling police on 0845 600 5705 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
