Rae backing depleted Dens men
Dundee manager Alex Rae is expecting nothing less than a keenly-contested 90 minutes when his side kick-off their league campaign against Ross County on Saturday (writes Graeme Finnan).
Leaving nothing to chance, Dens assistant boss Davie Farrell was dispatched to Victoria Park at the weekend and watched as the Highlanders beat St Johnstone 2-1 in the Challenge Cup — and his report back was no more than Alex expected.

However, the Dundee gaffer is confident his side can rise to the challenge, despite the fact they’ve been hit by injuries to several players.

He said, “Ross County are a very well organised side and are very fit so we are in for a tough game, there is no doubt about that. But, although we have a few lads missing, the guys that are available can do a job and we just have to get on with it.”

The majority of the first-team squad were in today getting advice on diet and preparation, while the treatment room at Dens remained busy. Of the cluster of injured players, Jim Lauchlan would appear to have the best chance of featuring at the weekend.

“We’re taking it easy with Jim at the moment and we’ll see how he is later in the week.”

It’s hoped fellow-defender Craig McKeown will be able to return to training before the week is out. Although the former Clyde man won’t be ready in time for the trip to Dingwall, he has been making good progress after suffering a groin problem at the pre-season training base in Malta.

Kiko Torres remains at the club and the manager expects another couple of trialists to arrive before the weekend.

No Gow move
Dundee United boss Craig Levein has knocked back suggestions he’ll be making a renewed bid to bring Alan Gow to Tannadice (writes Graeme Finnan).
The striker is surplus to requirements at Rangers, but the Tangerines wouldn’t be prepared to meet the 25-year-old’s wage demands.

David Goodwillie, meanwhile, did his first-team prospects no harm by bagging a hat-trick as a young Tannadice side won 4-1 at Forres Mechanics last night.

Marco Andreoni was also on target against the Highland League outfit.

Saints injury fear for opener
Steven Anderson is still rated very doubtful for St Johnstone’s league opener at home to Livingston on Saturday (writes James Masson).
The defender suffered a knee knock in the Challenge Cup loss at Ross County and, although he’ll be given every chance of making it, he looks an unlikely starter.

However, Kevin James has fully recovered from a leg injury and has trained this week without ill effects.

“Kevin’s looking OK. He’s trained without any problems,” said boss Derek McInnes.

Should Anderson fail to make it, James is his likely replacement.

However, Jody Morris, Kevin Moon and Steven Milne are out injured, while Alan Main is an injury doubt.

Saints have had Livi watched three times already so know what to expect.

“We took 12 points from Livingston last season and it would be nice to do that again,” Derek added.

“We know, however, they will be difficult opponents, so we’ll have to be at the top of our game on Saturday.”
