CHIC WAS MOST PROLIFIC SCORER

MARTIN MACKAY, self-professed “all-round committee man and website administrator at BLAIRGOWRIE JUNIORS”, has, over the past months, been reading with interest about the players who have scored five goals or more in junior football.

However, according to Martin, there is a glaring omission.

“I am surprised the name of CHIC DAVIE hasn’t been mentioned,” he said.

“I’m currently researching and writing a book about the history of Blairgowrie JFC and, with the benefit of my records, I can give you a list of Blair players throughout the 1950s who scored five or more goals in a game.

“The most prolific goalscorer in the history of Perthshire Junior football has to be the aforementioned Chic.

“Between 1951 and 1961, he scored an impressive 458 goals for the Berrypickers, 70 of which came in his first season at the club (1951/52).

“At the club’s recent 60th anniversary celebrations, Chic received an amazing standing ovation, while, in the town, he is regarded as a local hero.

“On Saturday, December 22, 1951, Chic scored six goals in an impressive 9-1 win over Perth side St Leonard’s.

“He hit another half-dozen on Saturday, September 10, 1954, in the first round of the Scottish Cup in an 8-1 win over Kinnoull.

“Blair actually reached the quarter-finals that season, only to be beaten by eventual winners Kilsyth Rangers in front of 4700 spectators at Davie Park.

“Two months after the Kinnoull tie,Chic scored six yet again in a record 18-0 win over Stanley.

“Also that day, club captain JIMMY RUSSELL scored a nap hand.”

Martin also unearthed other players who were prominent in the scoring stakes in the blue of Blair.

“Previously, the only other players to have scored five or more for Blairgowrie prior to these games are JIMMY THOMSON (12-1 v. St Leonard’s on Saturday, September 2, 1949) and an unknown man, which the records state was called McKENZIE (9-3 v. St Leonard’s on Saturday, January 18).

“RON McINTOSH scored five goals in a 10-0 win over Kinnoull at Davie Park in September 1957, then DOUG RIDDOCH also scored five in a 6-2 win over Stanley around the same time

“Having said all that, there is only one man in the history of Blairgowrie JFC who did it two weeks in a row — WILLIAM BROWN.

“After scoring six at Davie Park against Bankfoot on March 16, 1963, he scored a further five away from home against Crieff Earngrove in a 7-2 win the following week.

“My book is still to be finalised, but, if anyone has old photographs or newspaper cuttings from any era, I would be more than happy to get in touch.”

Trying to improve my swing (what swing? I hear you say) at Ballumbie Castle Golf Club driving range, I bumped into my old East Fife team-mate JIM FINLAYSON.

Jim was hitting the ball right up the middle and I looked on in awe, just as I did when he was scoring goals for fun for, firstly, Lochee United, then East Fife.

And it was a Junior article recently which prompted him to say, “I’ve been reading your stories regarding players who have scored five goals or more in the Juniors.

“I actually scored five in the first half of a game and failed to score any in the second half.

“If I remember correctly, it was for Lochee United against East Craigie at Craigie Park.

“Dickie Farquharson, who lived at that time just down the road from me in Kirkton, was in goal for the Shipbuilders that day.”

Jim was on fire with East Fife around 1970 when Crystal Palace — then playing in England’s top division — showed an interest.

Palace manager at the time was the flamboyant Malcolm Allison, and Jim was due to fly down to London after a Saturday game with the Methil side.

However, he was injured quite badly in that game and took a few months to recover, and the Palace interest wasn’t rekindled.

THE CHARLIE LOVE COLLECTION :: PART II.

Continuing with Charlie’s superb collection . . .

The photo below (top) is Charlie’s LAWSIDE RANGERS team of 1959.

In cuttings sent with the photo, it seems they were very successful, and were formed with young lads from the Hill Street area in Dundee (just off top of Hilltown).

“Four of the players also in the Dundee Schoolboys team which won the Scottish Cup in the 1950s — Gordon Wallace, Alec Foster, Willie Kelsay and (not in photo) Ian Sharp,” said Charlie.

“They played home games at Riverside and, under George Mackay, were very successful, winning leagues and cups, with most of their goals being scored by Wallace, Terry McFadyen and Willie Delaney.”

Back row (from left) — St Andrews ambulance man Alec Leddie (first aid and trainer), Charlie Love, Ronnie Johnstone, Jim Mulvey, Alec Foster, Ian McIntosh, Jimmy Young, George Mackay (manager).

Front row — Willie Kelsey, Jackie Bennett, Terry McFadyen, Gordon Wallace, Jimmy Delaney.
