Dundee services family get together
The fact she was serving in Afghanistan wasn’t going to stop Dundee woman Sonia Nicholson from wishing her nephews well as they set off for careers in the Army and Merchant Navy.
The RAF senior aircraftswoman is halfway through her tour of duty, but a week’s home leave gave her the chance to join a family get-together.

The party was held for Robert (18) and Josh (16) Keddie, who are about to begin their initial training. Robert, who attended Braeview Academy, will spend three years based in Newcastle preparing for working at sea, although a third of that time will be spent offshore.

He said, “I think it’s going to be great. I can’t wait to have a good career that allows me to travel and see the world.”

Craigie High School former pupil Josh will be based at an Army training centre in Harrogate for his 42-week course.

“I’m looking forward to getting away and bettering myself and having a good career,” he said.

Sonia said, “It’s good to catch up with family and let everyone know I’m safe. Our mum found it tough at first having two of her children in the forces, but now she understands the job and what it entails,” Sonia (27) said.

Her brother Robert (31) is also in the RAF. He is an NCO, but is about to start training to be a commissioned officer at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire.
