| Today he described fuel prices as “criminal” and said profits such as those reported by BP indicated there was scope for price cuts.
“They are crucifying the haulage industry just now,” said Mr Aitken.
“It is obvious they could cut their prices to help the economy and the haulage industry. The prices go up overnight but they take forever to come back down.
“It does seem as if fuel prices are starting to come back a wee bit, but that is largely because of what the supermarkets are doing.”
Other companies in Perthshire declined to become embroiled in the situation, but said they were fed up with the current prices.
Angus hauliers were mainly keeping their thoughts to themselves.
Alan Davie, whose name is on a fleet of trucks he runs from East Happas Farm, Inverarity, near Forfar, said, “I would have to analyse their figures first before saying anything. But it seems an awful lot of profit on the face of it.”
At C&G Brewster, Ballinshoe, near Kirriemuir, a spokeswoman said, “It’s just ridiculous, but we don’t want to comment any further.”
In Fife, David Summers, from Buckhaven haulage firm Robert Summers Ltd, said, “I don’t really have anything to say about BP’s profit apart from the whole business is a total disaster.”
Barclay Bros. Road Haulage in Leven was also contacted but declined to comment. |
