| As part of the council’s £90 million Public Private Partnership project to replace or upgrade several schools across the city there will be a new Downfield, incorporating Kirkton nursery school, on the site of the former St Columba’s Primary off Strathmartine Road.
Concerns have been expressed, through the Tele letters page, about the wisdom of having an entrance for the new school on Strathmartine Road, due to the volume of traffic.
Strathmartine ward councillor Kevin Keenan said he had seen the issues raised in the letters page and wanted to reassure parents safety measures are being put in place.
“A kerb barrier has been installed outside the entrance and a school crossing patroller will be on duty when the school opens in August,” he said. “School ‘Keep Clear’ markings have also been put on both sides of the road as a safety measure.
“In addition, a 20mph zone will be put on Strathmartine Road from Americanmuir Road to Haldane Street at the beginning and end of the school day. Tayside Police have also agreed to my request to have a presence in the area.”
Mr Keenan said the situation would be monitored by the council when the new school term starts. There will be a review of the arrangements for crossing patrollers after the first few weeks of the new term.
“The Strathmartine Road entrance is intended for pupils arriving on foot, not as a drop-off point,” Mr Keenan said.
“I’d like to stress the main entrance is on Haldane Crescent and it is important families play their part in ensuring road safety.
“The city council is doing everything possible to make sure children using the pedestrian access cross Strathmartine Road safely.” |
