Delighted by response to charity plea
Young Dundee cancer sufferer Caleb Gardiner, who called for Tele readers to donate prizes to a Tayside children’s charity, has spoken of his delight at the generosity of many local businesses.
A host of charitable business people saw the nine-year-old’s heartfelt plea in the Tele letters page recently and have responded admirably, sending in donations by the dozen.

Caleb, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour not long after his own mother passed away in late 2004, wanted to thank charity Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia (TCCL) and the nursing staff from Ward 29 at Ninewells by raising money so vital aftercare can continue to help families like his.

He said, “It’s amazing people I have never even met have given so much money to the charity. I’m over the moon.”

TCCL, which works closely with Ward 29, recognises the emotional distress and disruption childhood cancer and its treatment can cause families and organises day trips, parties and family holidays. Monetary assistance is also available.

Among those who have contributed to the stash of prizes are Hosies Electrical store in Broughty Ferry, who donated a 32-inch JVC TV with a matching stand and DVD player worth over £1000.

Tayside Plumbing also donated a set of power tools and City Electrics a combined food processor.

The goods will be raffled at the forthcoming Charity Gala Night, to be held on Saturday, August 2, in The Friary on Tullideph Road.

Andy McIntosh of TCCL, who is organising the gala, called the donations “fantastic”.

He said, “I’m overwhelmed. Everyone has been so generous.

“The charity helps so many children and their families get through very hard times.

“There are many, many people to thank but I would like to give a special mention to Elaine Wyllie because without her this event would not be happening.”
