Firm ‘committed to completing projects’
Troubled construction firm Stewart Milne Group said today it was committed to completing its numerous housing developments in Tayside and Fife.
The Aberdeen-based company announced earlier this week it was cutting 289 jobs from across its workforce and the move led to concerns that some of the firm’s developments would be mothballed, or closed down altogether.

The firm is currently involved in eight projects across Tayside and Fife, including the development of two sites in Dundee at Balmossie Green and Castle Gardens at Ballumbie.

A spokesperson for Stewart Milne Group said today the restructuring of the company would not affect work at any of its sites.

He said management had entered into a period of consultation with staff in which the jobs to be lost would identified.

The spokesperson said, “My understanding is that any developments that are on the go are going ahead.

“The jobs that are going are not just construction jobs, they are office jobs and sales jobs. It is not just focused on the guys that are doing the physical house building.”

The job cuts at Stewart Milne Group come in the wake of similar announcements from UK construction industry giants such as Barratt Developments, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey.

However, the picture is not all doom and gloom, with companies such as Gladedale (North East Scotland) — which has eight sites in the north east, including in Dundee — saying it was holding its own despite a “challenging market”.

The firm also confirmed it is committed to pursuing its interest in South Gray Village, part of the proposed Western Gateway development that would see large numbers of houses built on the outskirts of Dundee.

Inverkeithing-based Muir Group has also said it is competing well and is moving forward with new developments in Fife and Aberdeenshire.
