| Tayside Recyclers is taking part in the FoneAid mobile phone recycling campaign, which aims to reduce 90 million redundant mobiles in the UK, prevent them from going to landfill and raise money at the same time.
For every phone handed in — of any age and condition — Tayside Recyclers receive £3, and for every 100 phones collected they will receive an additional £100 of vouchers to spend in the High Street.
The organisation joined FoneAid to raise funds to allow them to continue in their recycling efforts. All money raised will be used to upgrade their premises at the South Dudhope Mill on Douglas Street.
Manager Joseph Lannen said he hopes the scheme will be successful across the city.
“Tayside Recyclers, as the name suggests, is all about promoting recycling in our community,” he said.
“It seems such a logical step to become more involved with FoneAid in their recycling efforts, hopefully helping each other achieve their recycling goals”.
The FoneAid recycling campaign is aimed directly at charities, sports clubs, hospitals, youth and voluntary organisations intent on fundraising
All of the collected mobiles are either recycled or reused in developing countries where landline networks are unreliable, patchy or even non-existent, ensuring that 100% of the phones collected are diverted from landfill sites where they can cause environmental problems.
Suzy Kelsall, operations manager of FoneAid, said, “An estimated 15 million phones are upgraded every year and FoneAid provides groups and organisations with an environmentally responsible way to dispose of them and raise cash at the same time.”
