Residents dread return of couple

The block of flats in Huntly Road today.

Residents of a Dundee tenement block were today anxiously awaiting the return of their “neighbours from hell” (write Graeme Strachan and David Clegg).
William Hamilton (50) and Annora Cosgrove (51) were due to return to Huntly Road in Craigie after serving a 13-week temporary eviction order slapped on them for anti-social behaviour.

Neighbours are dreading the return of the couple, saying they have been enjoying new-found peace since the turbulent tenants were kicked out.

They have been on tenterhooks since boards that have been covering the windows of the property were removed yesterday.

Now they are anxiously watching activity on the street for the couple’s return.

One neighbour said today, “The boards were taken off yesterday afternoon, but there’s been no sign of them yet.

“Everyone’s understandably anxious and worried about what’s in store when they come back. They are neighbours from hell.

“It goes without saying that nobody wants them back, but it’s out of our hands. We’ve just got to get on with things.”

The couple’s return to Huntly Road monopolised discussions at the most recent residents’ association meeting, held in the nearby sheltered housing complex and attended by around 50 people.

Residents said Hamilton and Cosgrove had “dragged the whole neighbourhood down” and left people too afraid to leave their homes.

Hamilton and Cosgrove were temporarily evicted from their home in May after trouble at the property left local residents scared to leave their own homes.

At the time of the temporary eviction order, neighbours spoke of the once-quiet street being turned into a circus with the number of visitors to the couple’s flat.

Neighbours recalled seeing vehicles arrive and depart in quick succession at regular intervals throughout the day and night and said they were living in fear.

Hamilton, who has a previous conviction for possession of heroin, also has numerous convictions for traffic offences.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant against anti-social behaviour.

Dundee City Council housing convener and East End councillor George Regan has also assured residents any misbehaviour by Hamilton and Cosgrove won’t be tolerated.

He said a no-nonsense approach would be taken with the couple and urged anyone who experiences any trouble to report it immediately.
