Public urged to ‘shop’ drink drivers
Motorists in Tayside and Fife are today being warned not to risk ruining their lives this summer with drink or drug driving (writes Jenna Cairney).
Both forces will launch a two-week summer safety campaign on Monday.

They are calling on the public to provide information about drivers who take alcohol or drugs.

And police are warning revellers returning from T in the Park to be fit for the drive home.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in Tayside, said, “Tayside Police, as with other Scottish forces, is committed to reducing casualties on our roads and notice of this campaign serves as a timely reminder to those attending T in the Park.

“Many campers will be leaving Balado on Monday — the day the campaign begins — for the journey home. I would ask them not to spoil what will hopefully have been a great weekend for them and make sure they are fit to drive home safely.

“It takes time for alcohol to leave the system and drivers must allow adequate time to make sure they are fit and safe to drive. Please, make it a safe T in the Park.”

With the warmer summer weather, people often enjoy outdoor events such as picnics or barbecues. Tayside Police are advising people not to risk putting themselves over the limit with generous home measures or various strengths of alcohol, and just to stick to soft drinks.

Police also warn drivers not to underestimate the gravity of being caught drink/drug driving. This can lead to a fine, disqualification or imprisonment.

This, in turn, can lead to someone losing their job, their income, their home and possible being shunned by family and friends.

Mr Bowman said, “Anyone who drives under the influence of drink or drugs and is arrested can expect to be brought before the courts to face the consequences.

“Do not underestimate the seriousness of the situation — it will profoundly affect your life and many of the things you take for granted in your everyday life. You will have to explain you actions to the courts — how will you explain them to your family?”

Almost half of those caught during last year’s summer campaign and the festive campaign were snared after calls from the public.

During last year’s summer campaign, 24 drivers were arrested for drink driving offences in Tayside, the vast majority (19) of those being men.

More than 90% of those drivers were under 55, and more than a third were under 25.

Mr Bowman continued, “The volume of calls we receive from the public throughout the year in respect of drink and drug drivers heartens me greatly, as they often lead to the removal of someone who, through their actions, represents a risk to every other road user.

“Furthermore, their actions invariably lead to the loss of a licence for that irresponsible driver. I would give every encouragement to any member of the public to get in touch with us if they know of someone who is driving or who is about to drive while under the influence.”

The force says the aim of campaigns such as this is to highlight the very real risks to all road users, which are posed by drink and drug drivers.

Any member of the public who wishes to report a drink or drug driver should contact Tayside Police on 0845 600 5705, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or, if the circumstances are urgent, via the 999 system.

In Fife, the campaign ties in with the force’s Safer Neighourhoods for Summer initiative.

Sergeant Joe Gardiner, of the road policing department, said that, in the coming fortnight, extra motorbike patrols will be deployed, together with unmarked police cars.

They will be out and about across Fife pulling over drivers at high visibility stop-points. The patrols will take place at all times of the day, with extra emphasis during mornings and evenings.

Mr Gardiner added, “Tackling the evil of people driving under the influence of drink or drugs — or both — is a year-round issue for Fife Constabulary.

“But summertime finds more people out and about due to the holidays and the better weather.

“This brings an increase in the number of people willing to take a chance on a few drinks, then going behind the wheel.

“The message from us is, ‘Don’t. We will be there to catch you’.”

And he also appealed to the people of Fife to join with the police to drive drink and drugs risk-takers off the roads of the Kingdom.

“I’m asking the people of Fife, and anyone visiting this summer, to help us in our efforts. Should they suspect anyone of drink or drug driving, then call us on 0845 600 5702.”

Fife Constabulary’s Safer Neighbourhoods for Summer campaign aims to tackle a range of crimes including vandalism, drink driving, underage drinking and antisocial behaviour — the kind of crimes that can increase along with the summer temperatures.
