MP meets NCR management
Dundee West MP Jim McGovern met NCR management today to discuss the company’s future plans for the city (writes Stefan Morkis).
Mr McGovern arranged the meeting after NCR announced that 51 of its 800-strong Dundee workforce are to be made redundant.

The job losses come just a year after NCR slashed 627 jobs as they switched the bulk of their manufacturing operations to Hungary where staff costs are lower.

The Labour MP met management in the wake of those redundancies and was told he would be kept informed about further developments at the plant and is angry that this has not happened.

Before the meeting Mr McGovern said he was to meet management with Gillian McKay from the trades union Unite.

“I attended a meeting during the last summer recess following the announcement of the 627 redundancies.

“Management told me that never again would I find out about redundancies on the day of the announcement.

“I was to be kept informed, but then on Monday I find out 51 more people are being made redundant.”

Mr McGovern said he was also concerned at the way the redundancy process has been handled

“As far as I’m aware there was no consultation with the trade unions,” he said.

The MP also intends to discuss the 10 workers who have been brought from India to work in the plant.

“They have been brought over for familiarisation and I will be making sure they comply with minimum wage and immigration legislation,” he said.

“Also, could 10 of the 650 people made redundant last year not have slotted in if the workers were needed?” he asked.
