Euro middle man for Dee?
Being on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean is not stopping Dundee boss Alex Rae’s efforts to plug the gaps in his midfield caused by summer departures (writes Tom Duthie).
The second full day of the Dark Blues’ training camp in Malta brought the news that tomorrow will see a vastly-experienced midfielder fly out to join them for a trial.

With last season’s stalwarts Scott Robertson and Kevin McDonald both now at new clubs, the squad is light in that area.

The man joining up this weekend is not being named, but just the fact Dundee are going to the trouble of getting him to Malta is an indication of how serious their interest is.

“The new guy should be here tomorrow. He’s an Eastern European with Champions League experience and his background means he is certainly worth looking at,” said Alex.

For those already working under the Maltese sun, things continue to go smoothly and the manager remains pleased with the quality of work his men are putting in.

Hughes not heading for Tannadice
Dundee United will not be signing Oldham striker Lee Hughes, but stressed today the decision not to make a move had nothing to do with the player’s past (writes Tom Duthie).
While he was an emerging talent at West Brom, Hughes was jailed for causing death by dangerous driving in 2004 and has been trying to rebuild his career at Boundary Park since his release last year.

Having had a successful season there, he has been linked with a number of clubs, but United boss Craig Levein made it clear today he was not attempting to bring the 32-year-old to Tannadice.

“What has happened here is that an agent called about Lee Hughes and told me he was out of contract,” said Craig today.

“I did a wee bit of research, however, and found out he still had a year of his contract to run, so I did not even make an enquiry.

“Oldham would be wanting quite a bit of money for him and, as we are still not exactly flavour of the month with them, I couldn’t see them wanting to do business with us anyway.”

The Latics dislike of United stems from last summer and the Chris Porter transfer saga.

Although Porter ended up going to Motherwell, it was United’s interest that unveiled the fact that, under FIFA rules, the £1 million-rated striker could head to Scotland for free.

While it was the world ruling body and not United or Motherwell, who effectively cost Oldham a seven-figure sum, the sense of injustice down there lingers on.

Returning to Hughes, Craig stressed it was football matters that dictated no move would be made.

“If he’d been out of contract, I would have been interested because he is a good player. What happened in the past was extremely unfortunate, but he has served his penalty and should be allowed to move on.”

Saints set off
St Johnstone set off at 8 am today for their five-day training stint in the English midlands (writes James Masson).
Included in the party were goalkeeper Greg Kelly, released by Aberdeen, a Spanish left-back and former Hearts and Ross County striker Derek Holmes.

Manager Derek McInnes said, “We’ll train later today and then work out every day before returning to Scotland on Wednesday.

“The trip will be intensive. We’re going down south to work.”
