| Fraser Carr (17), who has been confined to a wheelchair since contracting the viral infection encephalitis, is currently in Ninewells Hospital and news of the trip left the family “thrilled”.
The competition was held at the Great Scottish Walk and involved entering a new name for the walk’s mascot, previously called Scottie.
Fraser’s sister Isla put forward the name Munro on behalf of her brother, who had enjoyed hill-walking before his illness.
Fraser’s mother and his sisters completed the walk and later discovered Munro was chosen as the most fitting name for the walk’s mascot, who represents various charities during the hike.
Great Scottish Walks decided to change their mascot’s name after a change in management this year.
The Carr family are hoping to take the holiday, which is courtesy of Canvas Holidays, next year in time for Fraser’s 18th birthday in May, and will stay at a luxury campsite.
Mum Alison said, “This trip means a lot to us as we know we won’t be able to have a break away this year.
“Fraser has been in hospital for the last three months.
“He’s currently got a bad chest infection. We’re hoping that by next year he’ll be on the road to recovery and we can take him to France for this trip.”
Encephalitis is a condition that causes swelling of the brain.
Alison added, “We’re thrilled as a family to have the opportunity to get away together. It’ll be a well-earned break for Fraser, my two daughters Isla and Heather, my husband John and myself.” |
