COYLE LINKED WITH KALVENES
Former Dundee United full- back Christian Kalvenes has been linked with a shock return to football on this side of the North Sea with English Championship outfit Burnley (writes Tom Duthie).
That news will shock Dundee United fans, who said a fond farewell to the 31-year-old at the end of last season after he announced he was returning home to Norway because his wife was homesick.

Boss Craig Levein, though, is aware of this development and knows the player has not “done the dirty” on his old club.

Just this week he was linked with home-town club Brann Bergen, from whom he signed for United in 2006, but it now appears he could be on his way to Turf Moor instead.

Such a move could see him leave his wife and young family at home in Norway and involve an arrangement enabling him to return to visit several times during the season.

That may not be an ideal situation, but, as he reaches the veteran stage, Kalvenes may find it hard to reject a salary considerably higher than anything he has earned in his career to date.

If Burnley do get their man, it will be a second successful raid on the City of Discovery in just 24 hours after they secured the services of Dundee’s highly-rated Scotland U/21 international Kevin McDonald.

DENS MEN OFF TO MALTA
They were swapping rain in Manchester for Mediterranean sunshine and an increase in temperature of around 20C, so Dundee boss Alex Rae felt little need for explanations as his squad touched down in Malta today (writes Tom Duthie).
The Dark Blues will spend the next 10 days in a training camp on the island and Alex sees it as the prefect way to kick off the build-up to another First Division campaign.

“We’ll train first thing in the morning and again in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day, but, when you see the weather we’ve left behind, it makes sense to be doing this,” he said.

“Over the next week or so, we will be working in perfect conditions and should be able to get a lot done without worrying about the weather.

“We’ve also got new faces on board, so getting the boys together should help the squad gel quickly.”

Included in the travelling party are two trialists who will have the chance over the next week or so to show they are worth contracts.

While Alex expects conditions to be perfect for most of the stay, the players could be in for some noise pollution tomorrow evening — 1980s super group Duran Duran have a concert right next to the training complex.

SAINTS LINK
St Johnstone have been linked with former Hearts and Ross County striker Derek Holmes, now at Rotherham (writes James Masson).
He is one of a number of targets they have in mind.

The front man netted 11 times last season and Saints are keen to add that type of player to their squad.

Meanwhile, the McDiarmid Park outfit have denied a report that Partick Thistle left-back Marc Twaddle is a target.
