Security sweep at NHS sites
NHS Tayside has ordered a sweep of sites where confidential medical records have been stored in the wake of the Strathmartine Hospital debacle (writes Marjory Inglis, medical reporter).
A report on an internal investigation into the events at Strathmartine was forwarded to the Scottish Government on Friday. The Government and the UK data watchdog launched investigations after the furore over Strathmartine.

Local health chiefs came under fire last month after private records were found strewn around the disused hospital site, sold to a developer three years ago.

The documents included details of a baby born an alcoholic and of children with disabilities who were adopted from the institution.

After the situation was uncovered by a paranormal group who combed the site, NHS Tayside assistant chief executive Danny McLaren issued a full apology and said the records should not have been left in the buildings.

However, once the health authority was alerted to the problem, they were told by their own estates staff the derelict buildings were in such a state that their own staff could not clear the site for health and safety reasons.

The buildings are dilapidated and asbestos is present. NHS Tayside called in specialist contractors to remove all documents from the site.

An NHS Tayside spokeswoman said today that work was now complete and all documents recovered had been put in “a secure container”.

Further, she said disused buildings on the Sunnyside Hospital site near Montrose and other NHS Tayside sites had been checked thoroughly.

“All other NHS Tayside sites have been searched by staff to ensure appropriate levels of security exist where confidential information is stored,” said the spokeswoman. “We have completed our internal report and it is now with the Scottish Government.”

It is not clear whether potential for any further security breaches was uncovered on the other sites. A full report is going to the board of NHS Tayside next week, said the spokeswoman.
