| Sarah Rooney, who lives in the Mid Craigie area, was excited when she saw the letter because it was the first she had received since she and Gary tied the knot on May 31, and she took her husband’s surname.
However her excitement soon turned to disgust after opening the letter and reading that her husband was deceased.
Luckily Gary was with her at the time.
She said, “The letter had my name on it and it thanked me for informing them of my husband’s death.
“It was as if they were replying to me, but I have never phoned them.
“I had to read it about four times before I could believe what I was reading.
“My husband phoned and they have tried to blame it on a computer error, but the form that was sent with the printed letter was handwritten.
“The letter thanked me for contacting them on June 3.
“Gary had phoned them on June 3 regarding a rebate, but that was it.
“It’s quite worrying and I hope we’ve not received someone else’s letter and they’re waiting for it.
“We’re lucky my husband doesn’t work away from home, I would have had a real fright then.”
Gary said, “Sarah was quite excited because it was the first letter she had received since changing her surname.
“We feel quite upset and shocked. It’s not a nice thing to receive at all.”
A spokesperson from HMRC said, “Due to our confidentiality policy, we do not comment on individual cases.
“However, if the couple have a specific complaint we would advise them to send copies of all the documents to our complaints team.” |
