‘Just a practical joke’ says mother
The mother of a boy who took video footage of a Dundee schoolboy having his hair and eyebrows shaved off insists it was “just a practical joke” (writes Eve Noon).
The woman, who declined to be named, spoke out today after hearing first hand about the mobile phone footage of 14-year-old Daryl Beattie being set upon by three youths.

Braeview Academy pupil Daryl alleged that on Friday lunchtime the youths pinned down his arms and legs before taking chunks out of his shoulder-length brown hair and shaving his eyebrows.

The mother of the camera-wielding youth defended her son’s actions when she told the Tele ,“It was just stupid kids mucking about on the last day of third year – it was just a practical joke.

“It’s just annoying me reading that it was an attack. It’s gone too far — it was just stupid kids.”

She went on to explain that she had not seen the 30-second footage because it was not captured on her son’s mobile phone as he was using someone else’s phone at the time.

Daryl’s mother Sharon McCourt raised concerns about her son’s health yesterday because she believes the traumatic incident occurred outwith school grounds and instead behind the Whitfield Complex – an area known to be frequented by drug users.

Her son, who struggled to hold back tears as he described the attack, was due to have blood tests to confirm if he had been infected.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said, “Officers spoke to the complainer again last night and inquiries are continuing today.

“This will include a review of CCTV footage in the Whitfield area where the incident is alleged to have taken place.”
