| Alex Nicoll, who has welcomed customers to Jahangir Tandoori Restaurant in Session Street for “18 years and three months”, retired on Saturday.
Mr Nicoll, a former social worker with Tayside Regional Council, said he was keen to keep on working after retiring from that job in 1990.
“I didn’t want to vegetate, but I wanted a job without the pressures of social work, and this seemed perfect. I’ll be sad to leave, but I’ll get a few more games of golf in now!”
Mr Nicoll made headlines in 1998 when a man who had been refused entry to the restaurant assaulted him and left him with a fractured hip and facial injuries.
The man admitted assault and was fined £2000.
Alex, however, took it all in his stride.
“The guy headed me as he went out the door. I broke my hip, but it didn’t put me off working at all. I just got it fixed. I was more worried about the golf!”
Jahangir restaurant manager Karin Ali said, “Alex will be missed very badly. He’s been excellent for us, and will be very hard to replace.
“He’s become a landmark in himself.
“I’d like to thank him on behalf of all the staff and customers.” |
