Lobby PM over housing debt
I note that George Regan is calling on the Scottish Government to write off the city’s housing debt. I note that the then Chancellor, now the Prime Minister, offered to pay off the debt albeit with conditions attached.

Why doesn’t Mr Regan do what he is elected to do and lobby his Labour colleague Gordon Brown to see if a deal can be done with this money that the Prime Minister was willing to give us previously?

Or is he more interested in providing a smokescreen to cover his administration’s failings by trying to pick a fight with the Scottish Government? — Political Connoisseur.

Bumpy road for drivers

Bumpy ride: Traffic on the Arbroath Road.

The laying of an underground electricity cable across Dundee is currently progressing along Arbroath Road, which is being dug up in sections.

When the excavations are filled in it looks like a top-class job — until you drive on it.

From gliding along one of the city’s busiest routes you hit this new tarmac and your car begins to shudder. It is most irritating.

There are no potholes, but it seems to me that too light a roller or too coarse a tarmac has been used to finish it off.

I understand the council requires utility companies to reinstate any road dug up to the same standard and this clearly has not happened here.

I suggest the council gets out in a car and drives along the completed section as soon as possible as there are many more miles of road to be dug up before this project is completed. — Broughty Commuter.

Golden greats at 60s show
I enjoyed the Solid Silver 60s concert in the Caird Hall recently.

Cavern veterans The Swinging Blue Jeans’ most impressive number for me was their version of Burt Bacharach’s Don’t Make Me Over.

Liverpool legend Gerry Marsden raced through his hits and closed the show with a lump in the throat-inducing You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Undoubted stars of the show, however, were Dave Dee, Dozy Beaky, Mick and Tich, who still are able to recreate perfectly the driving, thumping beat punctuating their many hits.

After such a wonderful evening at a packed Caird Hall I can hardly wait for the next Solid Silver 60s tour. — Ron Snell, Forest Park Road, Dundee.

Fury at gun comments
I was absolutely furious when I read Sandy Smith’s comments regarding the Tele’s coverage of the incident at Barnhill Primary.

Firstly I praise the Tele for the way in which they reported this incident and contrary to what Sandy had to say this is a serious issue.

Let’s not forget two children were hurt and left scarred. Would Sandy have felt the same if one of these children belonged to him?

The way society is today there is no need to encourage the use of guns, especially not at this young age.

Reporting local news is the purpose of a local paper.

So Tele reporters keep up the good work. — Local Reader.

Glad it was publicised
With regards to Sandy Smith, he wouldn’t be saying this if it was his child injured by the pellet. Try telling a young child, ‘Don’t worry it’ll just bruise’, when he or she has just had, what appears to them, a gun pointed at him or her.

As a parent I’m glad this was publicised. The child should never have been allowed to buy it let alone take it into a primary school — Mrs M. McIntyre.

Housing protest
I note the Dundee Independent Housing Action Group was denied permission to campaign in City Square because it had neither a constitution nor public liability indemnity.

These demands by the authorities are a blatant attack on the right to free speech, on the right to assembly and on the right to campaign on issues affecting the citizens of our city. In the event, the protest went ahead without demur or action by the authorities, attracting support from the public who listened to our speeches read our leaflets and singed our petition.

While leafleting the Murraygate I came upon a group selling second-hand books who had two stalls and associated paraphernalia.

When I asked the organisers if they had a constitution or public indemnity cover, they looked at me as is I had addressed them in ancient Aramaic.

They had obviously never been asked about these supported requirements, insisted upon by the authorities in our case. — Raymond Mennie, DIHAG Activist.

Democracy
I read with disdain Michael Taylor’s correspondence regarding wrongful arrest and refusing to move on when asked to do so by police.

Mr Taylor should perhaps thank God that he lives in a country which is a democracy and its citizens do not disappear in the dead of night because of their beliefs. — K. S.

Station upgrade
Apparently Dundee’s Railway Station is in need of upgrading.

There is a growing backlash in England to the huge amounts of public spending in Scotland. So in light of this, we will probably just have to do without an upgrade. — Westender, Dundee.

Landfill problems
With the thousands of plastic bottles in circulation, it’s a disgrace there is no recycling programme for them and they are just dumped in landfill.

In Ireland and America they are processed into articles of clothing like fleece jackets. If Ireland can do this then so can we. Carrier bags are another issue. Bio-degradable bags were used more than 30 years ago, so the big supermarkets should be forced by the Government into using them. — Being Green.
