| More than a dozen caravans remained at the largest site off South Road while five caravans —complete with satellite dishes — were still camped on land off Tom Johnston Road on West Pitkerro industrial estate.
The smallest encampment of just two caravans was also still in place on land south of Dundee Medipark when the Tele visited.
The three sites sprung up earlier this week and have caused concern among residents living close by about safety and littering — especially at the site in South Road.
Scottish Enterprise, who own two of the tracts of land occupied, said today they were taking steps to have the travelling people moved on.
A spokeswoman said, “We reported it (the occupation of the sites) to the police on Tuesday. That is a fact. What we are now doing is taking the appropriate legal action.
Dundee City Council said today they had been involved in negotiations with the travellers occupying the sites. The authority provides a purpose-built caravan park for use by travelling people at Balmuir Wood at Tealing.
The site offers 20 caravan stands with a full electricity supply and a utility unit, which features a kitchen, bathroom facilities, hot and cold running water and a storage shed.
There is also a children’s play area.
Pitches at the site can be rented on a short or long-term basis and mail is delivered on a daily basis.
A council spokesperson said today, “A housing officer from Dundee City Council has been in regular contact with the travellers.”
Tayside Police have also been involved and have carried out visits to two of the sites.
However, officers cannot simply throw the travellers off private ground. Landowners must first serve campers with notices to quit the site and then allow them the opportunity to leave. |
