Dundee shirts Malawi-bound

By the end of this month a dozen or so youngsters in Malawi will be proudly wearing Dundee FC shirts thanks to one fan and the generosity of the Dark Blues (writes Tom Duthie).
But Grant Ager and his fellow members of a Habitat for Humanity team aim to do much more for the locals in a small corner of the impoverished African country than provide some clothing.

Grant, director of Fairfield Housing Association in Perth, will be part of a 15-strong group put together by the Dunfermline Building Society who will spend a week from May 24 building new housing in the capital Lilongwe.

And thanks to the generosity of the people throughout Scotland, the building work will continue long after the team has returned home.

“It’s been quite staggering. I’ve had donations of over £6000 myself and between 15 of us the total now stands at around £35,000,” Grant said.

“That means that working alongside the locals we will be able to build four houses while we are in Malawi and leave behind funding for another 31 to go up after we’re gone.

“As well as making a donation, Laura Hayes at Dundee came up with a set of tops for us to hand out and it’s good to know there will be a few new fans of the club in Malawi from the end of the month!”
