Saints snap up United keeper
St Johnstone made another addition to their squad today with Dundee United goalkeeper Euan McLean signing a two-year deal with the Perth club (writes Eric Nicolson).
Assistant manager Tony Docherty believes the Scotland U/21 cap, who failed to become a first-team regular at Tannadice, is ready to make that step at McDiarmid Park.

Tony said, “I’ve known Euan for a long time. He was at United for the four or five years I was there. He has a real presence, is a great shot-stopper and is good at coming for crosses. I think he’s now ready to play first-team football and to contribute to our push for promotion.

“We’re getting him at a good age and he will benefit from working alongside an experienced keeper like Alan Main. We now have two keepers capable of fighting for the No. 1 jersey.”

It’s been a busy start to the close season for the Perth team, with Chris Millar, Gavin Swankie and Collin Samuel also being signed and Jody Morris re-signing.

Tony pointed out, “Everything is coming together. Derek (McInnes) was clear as to the type of squad he wanted to develop and it’s great the players we brought in are buying into what we want to do here.”

McLean (22) is looking to learn from Main and challenge him for a spot in the starting line-up. He explained, “It’s a great move for me and I’ve real respect for Derek McInnes, Tony Docherty and Alan Main. I haven’t come to play second fiddle, but Alan’s a great player so it will be hard to replace him.

“And I think we’ve a good chance of winning the First Division.”
