| Figures obtained under freedom of information legislation show 14 children in the city are being taught by a parent or guardian. Five years ago there were only nine children being taught at home.
The figures echo a Scotland-wide trend that has seen the number of withdrawals from state education almost double since 2002/3.
Alison Preuss, of Dundee-founded home education charity Schoolhouse, said, “There are certainly quite a few home educators from the Dundee area and it is definitely a growing number.”
The charity was established in Dundee in 1996 by parents who felt there was a lack of information for those wishing to home educate their children.
A Dundee City Council education department spokesman said parents who decided to home educate were supported by the local authority.
He said, “If consent is needed, applications for withdrawing children from school have to be made to the education department. Applications then go to the education committee for approval.
“The education department makes contact with home educating families on an annual basis to review progress and discuss any additional support required.” |
