No fatigue factor
Despite their hectic schedule, Dundee United boss Craig Levein isn’t expecting Rangers to show any signs of tiredness when the pair meet at Ibrox on Saturday (writes Graeme Finnan).
The United boss was an interested spectator as Walter Smith’s men ground out a 1-0 win over Motherwell last night to keep the title race within their own hands.

And Craig dismissed all talk about his side facing a Rangers team suffering from serious signs of fatigue.

He said, “Last night, I thought Rangers got stronger and stronger as the game went on, which is quite remarkable when you consider the amount of games they’ve had to play recently.

“However, it was incredibly tense at times. Even after they had gone in front, the last 15 minutes were pretty nervy.

“We can possibly use that to our advantage on Saturday and what we need to do is make sure we don’t concede a goal early on.

“We have to keep the crowd quiet and give ourselves a chance.”

United reserves, meanwhile, have their own hectic schedule to contend with and, this afternoon, 48 hours after meeting St Mirren, they faced a Celtic second string at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium.

Garry Kenneth’s knee injury, picked up against the Buddies on Tuesday, is nothing serious, although it’s unlikely the towering centre-back will start at the weekend.

United’s hopes of taking Gretna keeper Greg Fleming on trial may be scuppered.

The Scotland Under-21 man is considering a long-term deal with Oldham.

Surgery for McMenamin
Dundee’s Colin McMenamin is set to go under the knife next week (writes Graeme Finnan).
However, before Dark Blues fans start sweating, the striker should be fit in time to renew his partnership with Mickael Antoine-Curier when the season starts.

McMenamin will have surgery to cure a groin problem, but is expected to be fit enough to join in when pre-season training begins.

Paul Ritchie, meanwhile, has emerged as a candidate for the vacant manager’s post at Berwick Rangers.

And, although Ritchie is still under contract as a coach at Dens, the club are unlikely to block any switch should he decide to move on.

“Paul is under contract to us and we are currently looking into how we might best use him on the youth development front,” said chief executive Dave MacKinnon.

“At the same time, however, we wouldn’t stand in the way of him progressing his career.”

Dens midfielder Kevin McDonald has again been named in Billy Stark’s Scotland Under-21 squad for the challenge match against Norway at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock, on Tuesday, May 20.

Dundee United keeper Euan McLean, who is free to find a new club when his contract expires in the summer, is also in the squad.

McInnes pursues targets
St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes was again a busy man today, speaking to clubs and agents about players (writes James Masson).
Although Saints have snapped up Gavin Swankie from Dundee, Chris Millar from Morton and former Dundee United player Collin Samuel in the last week, they are still pursuing other targets.

“We have some positions I want to fill and we are working towards doing that,” said Derek.
