Bike and hike team’s effort for Maggie’s
It was time to relax today for a team of seven who yesterday completed a monster bike and hike in aid of charity.
Lorna Stevenson (40), a senior lecturer at Dundee University, was delighted with her team when they took part in the Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike.

The 24-hour challenge is aimed at raising money for the services offered by Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. Lorna has fought her own battle with the disease and has committed herself to various fund-raising events.

In summer 2004, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and advised to visit the Maggie’s Centre at Ninewells Hospital. By March 2005, she was able to return to work and she attributes a large part of her recovery to the centre’s services and support.

Lorna’s team was a combination of her family and friends — five achieved silver and two achieved gold medals.

The gold award was for those who completed the full 30-mile cycle ride, followed by a 43-mile hike, from Fort William to Inverness on the Great Glen Way. The silver medal involved a 31-mile cycle then a 24-mile hike ending in Drumnadrochit, by Loch Ness.

Lorna’s team have so far raised over £9000, but they are still hoping for more as they continue to collect donations until the end of June deadline.

“When I told my husband I was going to take on the challenge, he said he wanted to do it as well and then other family members and friends also wanted to get involved.

“We are all still wearing our medals today and we will probably still be wearing them next week — about five of us have already said we will do it again next year,” she concluded.

Each person who takes part in the event is asked to raise £400 to support and extend Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres across the UK.
