Letters - 01 May 2008
People should be listened to
It is no surprise Kevin Keenan, the Leader of the Administration of Dundee City Council, refuses to recognise the newly formed Dundee Independent Housing Action Group and supports the Dundee Tenants Federation.

Housing is a political issue, as the Federation stated in the apology for absence read out at the public meeting. Well if this is the reason for their non attendance, why does the Federation meet with politicians and officer members of the council to discuss these same issues?

Are they meant to represent the views and opinions of the tenants in Dundee, or are they there just to kowtow to the council? I for one give the newly formed group my support as they are listening to the voices of those who are suffering.

Let us have a proper consultation with the people of Dundee. I urge Dundee tenants to get behind this new group. — Rose Tait.

Ladywell problems continue

Cars parked in Ladywell Avenue.

Parking in Ladywell Avenue, Dundee, remains an issue.

After speaking with my councillor recently I have been told it can take up to two years for legislation to go through for a resident-only parking area.

He also informed me letters had been sent out some time ago to residents about the parking problem.

However, I have received no such letter and neither has any of the residents to whom I have spoken.

Cars are now parking on the pavements right outside front doors.

I invite the council to come to look at the problems and view the area after 6pm and 9am. — Fed-Up Resident.

Copying keys is costly business
My neighbour broke a key in an internal door lock, and asked to borrow one from me to see if it fitted.

It did, so off she went to have a couple of duplicates cut at a city centre shop and was told yes, they could make a copy — for £75!

Naturally she was out the door in a flash.

So a wee warning — take good care of your keys! — Key Keeper, Dundee.

Grangemouth row “ludicrous”
If the reports are true that the workforce at Grangemouth was striking because individual workers have been asked to contribute to their pension provision, it is a ludicrous situation.

Having worked for local government for 40 years and having contributed 6% of my earnings to the scheme, it is my opinion that no one should be entitled to a pension of any kind to what they have not contributed to.

I am sure there are many people out there who will be very angry at the disruption by such a ridiculous claim.

I am sure there are many people who would love to have a final salary pension and be prepared to contribute to it annually. — Roadrunner.

The real question
Over the past week or two, news reports from Grangemouth oil refinery have said a “shutdown” could bring the whole of Scotland to a “gridlock”, but don’t panic.

The Tele asked people if oil refinery workers should be allowed to strike?

I believe the question should be, “Why are our country’s energy supplies, owned and controlled by private companies?” — Canawa.

Good yarn
I would just like to congratulate Dundee Rep on their production of the show Yarn.

The cast is absolutely brilliant. The fact that the production was based in Verdant Works helped bring the show to life in a spectacular way.

This has to be one of the best performances I have seen of late. — Tayport Resident.

Abertay answer begs question
I thank the Tele for highlighting my plight, but Abertay Housing Association’s response has left me scratching my head. According to the figures there are 2074 people on their waiting list. They get 200 voids a year and they only let 100 properties a year so where does this leave me in Abertay’s grand scheme?

I only want to live beside my son so I can see him every day. Is this too much to ask? I work full-time, but maybe I should start signing on and claim to be a drug addict to get a house. Come on Abertay, do me a favour and give me a house. — Homeless.

Late mail
Why is there late delivery of mail in Cardross Place, Dundee, which is served by the Dundee West depot?

Most days mail arrives between 2.30 pm and 3pm.

I know it is not the fault of the person delivering, so the fault must lie with the Royal Mail itself. We have a secure entry system, which is locked after lunchtime. So if no one is in the block, mail is held back until the next day, or later. — Left Waiting.

[A Royal Mail spokeswoman said, “There has been an issue about gaining access to these addresses because of the secure entry system.

“Royal Mail has reviewed its delivery route to take this into account and to ensure customers get their mail on time.

“Royal Mail does occasionally have delivery problems because of secure entry doors to communal stairs and we work with local authorities and landlords to address these issues where possible.

“Customers can also contact their local authority or landlord to request changes to secure entry times.”

Tesco brings benefits
Letter writer Fair’s Fair thinks Tesco and the other big supermarkets have the public at their mercy and have killed off corner shops.

But Tesco employs many folk at their Dundee stores compared to the number who would be employed in small businesses.

I don’t believe the supermarkets are in cahoots over pricing policy. — Common Sense.

Taxi debate
Re the taxi trade leader who accuses nightclubs of contributing to violence. Many pubs are just as guilty of serving people who obviously have had enough to drink.

If it became mandatory to have CCTV in every taxi, this would be a deterrent to abuse.

Further, if people are as drunk as he states, why uplift them in the first place? — B. C., Monifieth.
