Levein may offer ex-Dens striker deal
Striker Kevin Smith looks to be edging closer to earning a prolonged stay at Dundee United after impressing in his latest reserve performance (writes Tom Duthie).
The former Sunderland and Leeds United man, who also had a loan spell at Dundee last season, grabbed one of the second string’s goals as they won away at Hearts yesterday.

Boss Craig Levein was watching from the stand at Forthbank and admitted today he liked what he saw from the 21-year-old, whose season has been blighted by double knee surgery.

“He got 85 minutes and a goal and, after his problems, that was the main thing, but I have to say he did well again,” said Craig.

“If he keeps progressing, there is a good chance I’ll offer him a contract for a year so that we can have a good look at him once he is fully fit next season.”

Smith will not be considered for the first-team trip to Motherwell on Saturday and, while he will be in the 18 for that lunchtime date, midfielder Prince Buaben will have to be content with a place on the bench.

The Ghanaian was another who impressed yesterday, but will have to remain patient for another chance in the top team.

“Prince did well, but his problem is that the midfield have been performing for me and I don’t see the need to change bodies in that area right now.”
