| The initiative was started six weeks ago and the 16 pastors are delighted at the response they’ve had from the public.
“We’ve had no abuse, no jibes” said Mike Archibald one of the driving forces behind street pastors.
The group bases its work on the words, Listen, Care and Help, and that’s exactly what they do. Mike explains, “We don’t preach to people and we are not an arm of the police or council. We’re here to help people. We’re there for the punter.”
For five hours each Saturday night, the street pastors patrol Perth city centre with a remit to help those who are seeking it.
Another pastor, Sandy Scrimgeour, explained, “We’re available to talk to people who want to talk to us — and it can be about a whole range of problems.”
As well as speaking to those who approach them, the street pastors are also doing their bit for the environment.
“We must have picked up about 200 bottles and glasses in the six Saturdays we’ve been on the streets,” Mike added.
“Every one could be used as a weapon, so we’re saving the NHS a bit of bother.”
Such has been the success of the Perth Street Pastors that other towns are thinking of following their lead.
Mike is going to speak to a street pastor group being formed in Dunfermline and other groups are getting under way in Arbroath and Helensburgh.
And Perth Street Pastors are looking to recruit more people.
